    Badu is Back!

    The first release in five years from Ms. Erykah and the wait was well worthwhileOn her 4th studio effort she adds to that sort of specific grandiosity of uniquely socially conscious R & B in a groove somewhere between the likes of Marvin Gaye, Curtis Mayfield, A Tribe called Qwest and P.M. Dawn. The opener "Amerykahn Promise," puts out a hip-hop/bebop groove by Badu straight over an obscure seventies funk track by Roy Ayers's protégés Ramp. "The Healer"and "That Hump" deal with a nation's drug dependency, while "Soldier" deals with the state of today's Black America. The music locks into various fat grooves oozing with Badu's usual quirky-cool eccentricities. Her collaborators, producers Madlib, 9th Wonder and the three man unit Sa-Ra keep New Amerykah Part One honest, relevant and ...
