Of course, the Penquin Monarchs' series is only ever going to be a brief summary of the Kings and Queens of our nation, but I would at least expect them to provide an impartial and balanced narrative on the politics of the day as well as on the monarch's own actions and legacy. Too much these books peddle the prevailing view. Henry VIII was a beast; Queen Elizabeth I was the best monarch we ever had; Mary I was a brutal, unforgiving Catholic etc., etc. This little book has absolutely nothing good to say about Richard II and portrays him in the usual standard way as being vain, avaricious and dumb and deserving of deposition. I found one grudging complement (on page 85 if you want to look for it). There can be no doubt that Richard II was imperfect but I hoped for something a little bit better than this. The final section on Shrine had little about Richard at all. Read full review
