This excellent interpretation of the Isaac Asimov book,by the same name, gave us the classic "Laws of Robotics." These laws were created to protect man from the robots programmed with them, but have been interpreted by a computer,in a way, that causes mankind to be enslaved by the computer and the very robots which were built to serve man. The psychological insights into both the special robot, created with the ability to act counter to the three laws,as well as the police detective who is investigating the murder of the designer of this robot,"Sonny,"describes the issues from the individual points of view of each. Sonny is seen, both as a free moral agent, and a messianic figure to his fellow robots. The detective has to look beyond the resentment he has for the emotional blindness of robotic logic,to understand the true reason the murdered designer has created Sonny,to save not only mankind, from the brutal computer logic, but also from our shortsighted lack of understanding of the nature of computerized artificial intelligence. What still complicates the issue is the second side of Sonny, the other reason his moral choice is so troubling. He is also Judas,to his creator, and his murderer. The story is a strange mix of the story of man, and his flawed attempts to deal with, and protect himself from his fallen world, while at the same time, bringing in an ancient discussion, concerning the dilemma of the necessity of a betrayer,Judas,in order to bring about the act necessary to save mankind, the sacrifice of the creator. The final issues brought up,in the end,are the forgiveness of Judas,as well as the salvation of the robots, but leaves one troubling picture. Is Sonny a picture of the Son of the creator? He thinks of himself as such. The writer leaves this enigmatic question to be answered by the reader/observer. The quality of the DVD was excellent, and the case and reproduced media info are of good quality.Read full review
