Excellent gardening blade
I bought this machete type blade to take the twigs off the branches from our hedges I’m cutting down. I can then let the branches dry out & burn them in my firepit later in the year. Really good weight & length & make’s short work of the twigs & skinny branches. Wouldn’t want to hack my way through a rain forest with it but that’s not what I bought it for. Arrived with the blade already sharp enough to use straight away. Don’t really need it any sharper, it’s for garden use not for shaving & I can thoroughly recommend it. Ineffective tool - Does not perform as you would expect.
Let me be clear from the start. I am a professional forester with over 25 years in the industry. So, I know what I am talking about when it comes to bladed tools, chopping, felling, building fires etc. My experience of this tool is that it is not fit for its intended purpose. My initial thoughts are that is not a hand axe or hatchet and cannot be used in any way similar to them. Although there is some weight to the tool, there is not sufficient weight to cleave even a small diameter log eg 5cm dia, into kindling. You would still need a hatchet to make the quarter splits first. Then, once you have thinned your small log into quarters, you *may* be able to use this tool to split once more - but what is the point when you already have your trusty hatchet in your hand? I thought I would be able to make a split into a small dia. log, then use the length of the fire side stick to cleave the wood apart like using a froe, but again this does not work due to the insufficient weight, and lets be honest, having to stand the log upright and holding it steady leaves you chopping towards your hand, which is the furthest from ideal - but that seems the best chance you have of using this tool. I thought that these problems were perhaps due to the fact the tool arrive relatively blunt, some edge, but not much at all, so even after sharpening and polishing the edge to a fine cut, there is still little performance from the tool. My next step was to take some very small twigs e.g. same diameter as a finger and to use the tool to cleave them. At this I had some success (and after my sharpening it to a very fine finish), but even so I felt that this was fairly pointless as to cleave wood that small with a tool like this is ineffective. You can simply feather sticks of that size with a knife and make "feathered fire sticks" (Google that) which make excellent kindling. On top of all that, although this is a full tang tool (good), there is a retaining washer on the blunt end of the handle that the tang is meant to pull against, keeping the handle on. Unfortunately, on my first use, this came off so I can see at some point the handle becoming loose and the tool potentially dangerous as the blade may spin when in use. So, all in, a wholly ineffective tool that is not fit for its intended purpose. I recommend that you don't waste your money on this, but get a decent lightweight hatchet (800-1000g weight), learn to sharpen and use it well, and you will be able to split as much small kindling, even from decent sized logs/branches (up to 20cm dia), as you need. The fire side stick is a complete waste of time.

Cutting kindling
I got the Nielsen kindling axe yesterday and got busy chopping kindling and I started with 10 fingers and finished with 10 fingers! This axe is easy to use and i started using a piece of green Hickory Limb .It worked ok but I switch to a rubber mallet and that was the ticket. It worked great with green hickory,season oak,and season Apple wood. You don't have to worry about cutting any fingers off or cutting your holding hand off. amazing, noycee . product behaves and does what is says on the tin ideal for that wild camping adventure garden clearance work coppicing if that's your thing will take a lump hammer blow for heavier stuff slight hitch the wodden handle is a bit sharp gloves. when it wears a bit the handle will smooth down
