Created by Monty Python's Eric Idle and produced by SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE creator Lorne Michaels, this mockumentary contains cameos from Mick Jagger, Paul Simon, Ron Wood, Bill Murray, and even one of the mocked himself, George Harrison. To make the comedy all the more exciting, this version was banned from United States television. Songs include: "Hold My Hand," "Number One," "Love Life," "Living in Hope," "Get Up and Go," "Cheese and Onions," "Doubleback Alley," and many others. A comedy parody of the Beatles in documentary form, from the formation of the group to the band's breakup. If you loved the Beatles and know their history, you will get a kick out of this DVD. Comedian Eric Idle is brilliantly funny in this production while playing two roles..

Back in the Spring of 1978, NBC broadcast a unique program about the pre-Fab Four- Dirk McQuigley, Ron Nasty, Stig O'Hara and Barry Wom; this group was, of course, known as The Rutles. With their wacky inventiveness and colorful musical talents, The Rutles ascended to the top of the world like no one else did before or since. This show tells about their lives, loves and legacy. Exploring the career of this group, the program takes a look at when they began in Liverpool; starting out in Hamburg with a 5th Rutle named Leppo; taking on Leggy Mountbatten as their manager; releasing such hit singles as "Number One", "With A Girl Like You" and "Between Us"; making their U.S. debut on The Ed Sullivan Show in February 1964; starring in the films "A Hard Day's Rut" and "Ouch!"; recording classic ... The songs are terrific and keep wonderfully in style with the Beatles sound. There is a segment where the Rutles appear on the Sullivan show, in which the original Sullivan footage is used for the intro--a simple but effective dubbing of "Rutles" for "Beatles" is used. If you like this you should check out Jabberwocky (Michael Palin) and Fawlty Towers (John Cleese). The only comment is would have that is negative is that there is no subtitles on this dvd and I love subtitles. There is a commentary and introductions by Eric Idle that is worth a watch and a photo gallery with selected memoirs of Eric's. Also has a few deleted scenes. A Must Have for any Python fan.

Monty Python Meets The Beatles
What can I say? This is a classic--a priceless (and affectionate) spoof of rocumentaries in general and of the Beatles in particular, full of inside jokes and wry observations on the silliness of modern pop culture. It's laugh out loud funny even while it's making a larger, very subtle point about how we waste our time. If you liked "Spinal Tap," you will love "The Rutles."
