Great game ^_^ I decided to buy it because I played Tales of Symphonia (which I love) and wanted to see what the first game in the Tales series was like, and it is one of the greatest RPGs I've ever played! The story line is rather simple compared to the other "Tales of" games, but still well developed and has great character development. The dungeon design is great for it's time. There are also some enjoyable side-quests and sub-events. "Let's Go Arche" mini-game after you beat the game is probably my favorite feature of the game. Definably a must buy for fans of the series. That's about it *_* I absolutely love the battle system, where you control one character and the AI controls the rest on the battle screen, but you can choose how the AI works by choosing what attacks and spells the characters perform and stratagize specific actions (ex. Have a character that uses magic use full magic to attack any enemy at will or use long range magic and only attack distant foes) As for the characters: Our main hero is Cress Albane (or Cless Alvien) takes after his father and practices the Albane Sword Fighting Technique. Not only does he wield swords, but axes and spears as well. Mint Anade is the primp and proper healer and supporter of the group. Claus (or Klarth) F. Lester is the Summons different spirits you make packs with on your jouney through the game. Arche Klaine is an easy going half-elf and magic-user. Chester Barcklight is a hot-headed bowman. Lastly, there is Suzu Fujibayashi, the ninja girl! Now the enemy: Dhaos, one who is willing to eliminate mankind at all costs to obtain what he desires. Our heros must travel through time and space in order to stop him. For those who've played other Tales games, this is a must buy! For those who love RPGs, this is a great RPG to get into!Read full review
I've never played the Original "Tales of Phantasia," so I can't compare the game to it. In fact, I've never played anything in the "Tales" series. Regardless, I enjoy this game. I'm yet to complete it, but so far it has been filled with exploring and fighting. Unlike many new RPGs, "Phantasia" gives you a relatively high degree of freedom to roam the world early. Some places are off limits, but you can travel to towns and caves out of order if you wish. This is a plus for exploring and finding treasures sooner rather than later. The battle environment is a 2D space where you control the main character. The others may be issued spell command and change formations, but generally you will just let them perform on their own with the strategy you lay out. This makes the battles relatively simple but with enough control to force commands you need. You can even put the main character on Auto if you want to take it easy. This game seems to have decent difficulty and exploring. It can be a little tedious going through dungeons at times due to high encounter rates, but it is mostly balanced. The game isn't the best RPG around, but it's far from the worst. It's a worthwhile purchase for any old-school RPG gamer.Read full review
I love the unique battle system, and the storyline is pretty awesome too. The puzzles in the dungeons are easy in some areas and kind of annoying in others, but overall I can't complain too much. The sidequests aren't retarded like a lot of games, and the character development (although a bit juvenile) has most all the right elements. It's humorous, dramatic, and even has some tragic moments that make you feel for the characters (but certain scenes could have used some definite improvements). I'd give it a really high 4+ out of 5, if not a absolute 5 considering the competition (as in most GBA games don't make use of the system like they should).
This is the first Tales game released in North America. I really like this game despite the fact that it has shown its age since it has been on multiple systems. I enjoyed the story, the development of the characters, and the gameplay is solid. The flow of the game is also great with plot twists here and there and what made me buy it was that I am a serious Tales gamer as well I had shortly before buying it found out it was a sequel to another Tales game released for the Gamecube. That is why I had to have it.
Reviewed for Big Boss Games By: TRC Tales of Phantasia is a tale of the past, present and the future. For the first time in the USA, Tales of Phantasia is gracing our shores with a quest of revenge and time travel. This is the first installment of the "Tales of ..." series from Namco. You start out as Cress, a young boy, and his friend go on a hunting trip, only to find that when they get back that their town is in ruins and everyone is dead. This game has been the most fun I have ever had with GBA system. Tales of Phantasia has enough action and adventure to keep you glued to your GBA for 70+ hours. The battle system takes some getting used to. You must assign your special attacks to certain button combinations, for instance: up, down, left or right plus B or B by itself will perform the special attack that you have assigned. You can assign the same move to all the button combos if you want to. For standard attacks you will press up, down, left or right plus the A button or the A button by itself. You can stop the action in the middle of an attack to give your team orders. Like you notice that you are almost dead, so you stop the action to tell your healer to cast a spell that heals your wounds. Scores: Graphics - They are great for the GBA, 8/10. Sound and Music - The voice acting in the beginning of the game hooked me in for the long haul 70+ hours of musical bliss, 8/10. Gameplay Battle system is perfect. Puzzles were tough enough for you to rejoice after you figured them out, 10/10. Overall The most enjoyable game to grace my GBA, 10/10. Perfect score! Run dont walk to get this game.Read full review
