About this product

Product Information

Bookshop owner Bernard has one major problem; he hates people, especially his customers. When he offers Manny Bianco a job during a heavy drinking session--an offer he grudgingly sticks to the next day--he finds that Manny can be nice to customers and actually sell books.

  • If you don't laugh, you're not right...

As a dedicated Graham Lineham fan and having watched all his creations since Father Ted was first aired, I could not miss an opportunity to watch this as well. Black Books, set in a London bookshop and run by a grumpy, drunken and almost insane Irishman (Dylan Moran), is the kind of humour that everyone can appreciate from the most stony-faced to the easily amused. Even my sister likes it and she has no sense of humour whatsoever. The combination of angry Bernard (Moran), downtrodden Manny (Bill Bailey) and their ever so slightly unhinged friend Fran (Tamsin Grieg) is fantastic and each character seems to both complement and contrast with the others seamlessly. From poisoning the pope, experiencing Dave Syndrome and finding distant relatives who are only interested in your Vauxhall ...

  • Black books - the complete series 1 to 3 (dvd 2004)

A masterpiece of satirical comedy! the story is based around a book shop, and three caracters .... Bernard Black a drunken foul tempered, bookshop owner who loves his books but hates all his customers, and the fact that they have to enter his shop in order to buy them. Manny,Bernards long suffering assistant who against all odds manages despite a constant stream of abuse to keep things running.... well sometimes! and Fran who is always searching for her inner karma between trying to find her cigarettes and looking for yet another reason to open another bottle of wine. I can highly recommend this inspired and original series to fans of diverse and at times ridiculous comedy. a rare treat!

  • Brilliant! Funny, clever, slapstick and wordplay. 10/10

I got this because, having missed it when it was first on TV, I caught some of the re-runs on More 4. These impressed me so much that I had to see more, and at this price... well, it was a no-brainer. I am really glad I did! From the first episode of series 1 to the last of Series 3, it is so consistantly funny that there are really NO stand-out episodes - every one is perfect. Scripts, performances and characterisation are so well done that there are moments when anyone would be helpless with laughter and moments when the ludicrous situations the three leads find themselves in will amaze you with their originality. The scene where Bernard and Manny, having drunk a friend's £7,000 bottle of wine, try to replace it with cheap plonk, vanilla ice cream, nutmeg and an oak leaf (they look up a ...
