The hallowed tradition of the post-college European backpacking trip turns into an unimaginable nightmare for two unsuspecting American 20-somethings in Eli Roth's (CABIN FEVER) sensational second outing. Paxton (Jay Hernandez) and Josh (Derek Richardson) have embarked upon a hedonistic tour of the continent, and somewhere along the way pick up travelling companion Oli (Eythor Gudjonsson). In Amsterdam the trio partakes of the pastimes most dear to frat boys everywhere: weed, prostitutes, and nightclubs. But when a fellow traveller tells these thrill-seekers about the decadent scene that awaits them in Bratislava, they find themselves unable to resist its lures; enticed by the promise of a hostel full of beautiful girls who love Americans, they set out for the remote areas of Eastern Europe. There, the sex farce to which the film's first half is devoted slowly turns ominous, as the boys hook up immediately with the gorgeous Natalya (Barbara Nedeljakova) and Svetlana (Jana Kaderabkova), whose eagerness masks more sinister intentions. Soon, the disagreeable backpackers find themselves on the other side of the flesh trade, sold by the girls into an exclusive human trafficking operation that gives its customers the opportunity to torture and kill a helpless victim. Much of what follows consists of the squirm-inducing surgical horrors that characterise precursors such as SAW, with the implications regarding the capitalist system and the human soul becoming ever darker. Produced by Quentin Tarantino, the film amps up the gore factor as much as it can get away with, and, in the tradition of the best horror films, offers a satirical socially conscious commentary.

Bought this film after seeing all the SAW films, beeing told that this was much better(Read:Worse, Goorier) Must say I was a bit dissapointed, not very suprising any of it. Maybe I have seen to many of these movies........!!!!!

Whether critics were constantly switching from Hostel to Eastenders or they're analysing the film in too much detail, I still don't know how they can make this film sound rubbish, cheap etc etc! First of all, let's think about the plot...THERE IS ONE, unlike the extremely samey storylines of friday the 13th parts 1-5 (although I am not trying to knock any of these films, as most are great in their own way)! Of course, people have their own opinions about everything! Hostel could also be conceived as a 2 act film, ie softcore eroticism/porn, and of course the next best thing: murder, in the similar sick mind of Saw. As we all know, horror films interlink sex with murder on countless slasher movies (Scream, Friday the 13th) and we could say sex lends itself to horror films a great deal. I ... I do understand critics points regarding there being far too much unnecessary sex scenes in the film. However, I personally believe, emphasised by two americans and an Icelandic off to Europe to discover themselves by way of their sexual needs, the sex vs horror act as such a comparison that the viewer is much more mentally attached to what is happening to the characters portrayed in the later parts of the film. I believe this is due to the innocence of the start of the film (meaning non-horror, not sex lol!) It also means the climax is far more intense than your average horror film as usually there is suspense throughout and way before murders begin. In Hostel, we see very little of this, and due to this the first third of the film could be compared to teenage comedy movies as American Pie, The Quest and so on. Final Thoughts: If you want something gripping, scary, original, and thought provoking (more than the average horror!) you should definately watch/buy this film. I came away from this film thinking Saw..? Pah! Hostel saws Saw in half!

Hostel It seems that today’s horror genre is no longer focusing on fear and bumps in the night, they cut out the middle man and go straight for the gore. It's not a question of how scary a film can get, but how many audiences it can make heave at the amount of blood gore and major gashes that the victims suffer. The one that really set the trend lately was Saw, audiences were shocked to the core to see a woman raid through a body for a key to a helmet that was going to rip her head open-only catch was that the body she was rummaging through was still alive…This original idea was something so horrifying but still managed to excel in popularity, it also loosened up the restraints for what filmmakers could throw onto the publics laps. It didn’t stop there though, the Jigsaw man and his ... Once again, not holding back on the psychological and visual horror that was executed so well in its previous instalment. Now, a new film is challenging the Saw series in turning the audience’s stomachs with Hostel, and like the previously reviewed V For Vendetta, this too has a big name stamped all over it, Quentin Tarantino is the executive producer of the film with Eli Roth-who previously directed the gore fest that was Cabin Fever. But just like V, was all the publicity and big names behind the film nothing more then something to brag about? Set in Europe, Hostel tells the story of three young backpackers who are informed of another youth boarding house not seen on the map somewhere in Slovakia, where the ladies are top notch and have a weakness for American men. Feeling stupid to turn down the chance, the men follow their urges and set off for the dream hostel. Arriving to greet everything they were hoping for, the place is a shag fest. The dream doesn’t last for long though, when it ends up that Paxton (Jay Hernandez) is the only backpacker remaining of the three, he sets out find where his two other buddies have disappeared to-dumbass… The search for his friends turns quickly to something Paxton could never have imagined in his darkest nightmares, as he is imprisoned and become subject to a perverted world of torture and murder, where people pay to fulfil there darkest desire to decapitate, disfigure and destroy their victims by any means necessary. Paxton is in a life or slow and painful death situation, and he’s going to try very hard to take the first option… Right, I’m going to get straight to the point if Saw made you heave, Hostel’s going to do pretty much the same job-as I’m sad to say I Saw (pardon the pun) this as pretty much the same thing. In fact, give it a sprinkle of the village folk from An American Werewolf In London and The Wicker Man and you’re there. Don’t get me wrong this is a very good idea to put on film, but there are certain aspects of it that you’ve probably seen before. A scene in which Paxton enters the village pub seemed so reminiscent of The Slaughtered Lamb from American Werewolf, I was almost shocked to not see the folk warn with “stay off the moors, lad.” But with all the slaying I’m continuing to give it the one thing it did do a good job in was the horror and fear factor.
