This is a good story about dealing with feelings about love when you're young. It's also about two grown adults who were lovers when they were younger and how they find eachother again. The story starts out when Molly and her parents arrive at an elite Maine resort, where her father had once worked as a lifeguard. The hotel owner feels that Molly's father is beneath him in social status. Johnny, the son the hotel owner, falls in love with Molly. Molly's parents can hardly agree on anything anymore. This situation is ignited even more when Molly's father sees Johnny's mother, his lover when they were younger. Johnny's parents aren't all too well either because of his dad's drinking problem. Molly and Johnny start seeing eachother against their parent's wishes. The two young lovers must face their parents and the world if they want their love to succeed. This may sound a little sappy or cliche, but this movie kept my attention for the whole two hours. It premiered in 1959 and it has subjects that were considered controversial at the time. It also features one of the most memorable movie themes ever, "Theme from A Summer Place." The movie stars Sandra Dee as Molly, Troy Donahue as Johnny, Richard Egan as Molly's father and Dorothy McGuire as Johnny's mom. The DVD's only special feature is the theatrical trailer. I wish they would have made a featurette or something talking about the movie since it was such a box-office hit. I think it is worthy of a special edition release. This movie seems like a good counter part to Peyton Place. It's shocking and romantic at the same time, full of well developed characters.Read full review
Winding curves and smashing dead ends make SUMMER PLACE a truly ironic tale of unrequited love and teenage lust. When a business man, Ken Jorgenson (Richard Egan) takes his wife, Helen (Constance Ford) and his daughter Molly (Sandra Dee) to an island off the coast of Maine, little does he suspect that he will rekindle the teenage love affair he once had with the now married Sylvia (Dorothy McGuire). Now it seems that events are going to repeat themselves when her son (Troy Donahue) and his daughter meet and fall in love. Subtle at first, SUMMER PLACE unfolds like a easy love story, but the surprise ending makes it difficult to forget. A all time Favorite Classic Movie a must for your DVD Collections... When my Husband and I were living in California we drove up to Carmel-by-the-Sea, California, USA were this movie was filmed the area we went to was breath taking a must drive if you live in that area... Long ago and far away, there were two teenage heart throbs that fell in love in this 1959 movie with such a great theme song. It is the story of Molly Jorgensen (Sandra Dee) and Johnny Hunter (Troy Donahue) when Molly visits the Maine seacost mansion that the Hunters own. It was love at first sight for these two, who must be in high school at the time. But underneath such an innocent love affair is much more. This story is also the tale of Johnny's mother Sylvia (Dorothy Mc Guire) and Molly's father Ken (Richard Egan) who also loved when they were young but couldn't marry because Ken was only a lifeguard and Sylvia was upper class. And their marriages are miserable as our story opens--his to Helen (Constance Ford) and hers to Bart (Arthur Kennedy). This movie seems dated, but the more that it tells its tale the more it still has lessons to tell. And its technicolor beauty gives it a 21st century look. There are many panoramic beach scenes to marvel over too. This movie made Troy Donahue a star. Its theme song was a #1 hit for weeks after the movie's debut, and it still sounds good today. This movie is a must see for anyone who hasn't ever seen it or for those who want to see what it was like to live in the 1950s.Read full review

If you are a lover at heart this movie is for you! It is a classic story of young love in the late 50's surrounded by love affairs of the parents from years ago. Sandra Dee plays the perfect "innocent" young girl who falls in love with the handsome Troy Donahue and can't bear to be apart from him. Her mother is a "prude" in the true sense of the word and can't stand to see her daughter happy. I love the old movie "classics" and this is surely one that you will enjoy from beginning to end! I highly recommend it if you love a good old fashioned love story.
Have loved this movie for years! Good quality dvd.
