Diddy is back with a new sound. His latest cd, 'press play' has a fresh, new feeling to it. He features quite a few big name artists on his album, such as Big Boi, Ciara, Nas, Cee Lo, Christina Aguilera, Mario Winans and Jamie Foxx, just to name a few. This is one of Diddy's best albums, so if you like what he's done in the past you'll love this one.
The general consensus is that Sean "Diddy" Combs can't rap and it's obvious that he don't write his own stuff ever since he said those infamous words on 2001's "Bad Boy for Life": "Don't matter if I write rhymes/I write checks." But none of that really mattered when the "Benjamins" remix or "Can't Nobody Hold Me Down" came on because most people were on the floor dancing. But those songs are from ten years ago at least so the question is that can Diddy still make you dance. Well, judging by Press Play debuting at #1, the public expects it. You can tell that a lot of time went into making this album by the production, the album sleeve design, and the heavy promotion (by Bad Boy standards, that is: only Biggie got that kind of promotion while artists like Craig Mack, Black Rob, New Edition, etc. sat in the shadows). It's too bad that not much time went into his rhymes. Even though Diddy never claimed to be the next Rakim, he should at least keep things a little interesting. Instead, he aims to be many different things to different people. You get the "cipher" rhymes for the backpackers on the Havoc-produced "The Future" and then you get some come-on stuff on the corny "Tell Me". He should at least try to stick with one style of rapping, especially since his rhyming is so criticized. When Diddy lends the spotlight to other artists is when the album shines. The latter half of the album has R&B artists dominating the songs like Keyshia Cole on "Last Night", Mary J. Blige on the Amerie-esque "Making it Hard" (well, it was produced by Rich Harrison--man, no wonder why Amerie doesn't work with him anymore), Brandy on "Thought You Said" and Keri on "After Love". But one surprising gem is "Everything I Love" where Diddy shares the mic with Nas over one of Kanye West's most exciting beats while Gnarls Barkley's Cee-Lo sings the hook. You can't go wrong with that combination. It's no surprise that Diddy gets by with a little help from his friends this time around. His best albums were when he had a Family (1997's No Way Out, 2001's The Saga Continues) and his worst album was when he was by himself (1999's Forever). Even as a producer, he always CO-PRODUCED many songs, hardly ever by himself, which is also the case on this album. Press Play may make you dance at a party but you may wanna keep pressing fast-forward while you're playing this anywhere else.Read full review
If you like to dance, Diddy has masterminded the album for you. His rapping leaves something to be desired, but on songs like "Tell Me" featuring Christina Aguilera, you almost forget that he's rapping. The beats are strong and they don't sound like the millions of repetitive beats that we've heard this year. Press Play doesn't fall under the canopy of "classic," but it does deliver on its ability to be a fun album.
I love it good condition and some good music
Verified purchase: Yes | Condition: Pre-owned
Great CD. I really enjoy it; with a wide selection on other musicians. I don't regret buying it! Aside from Timbaland (which is also featured), Diddy (in my opinion) is one of the best producers.
Good listening but felt that he has made better CD's in my personal opinion. Tended to be a little over rated compared to some of his earlier productions.
This album is upbeat! Press Play is a fabulous dance album. Diddy brings a new sound to each and every song. Most of the album is collaboration with various artists, which even makes it better.
Its ok.. what made this a good cd was all the collaberations, but even then, there only a few tracks on this cd that I really like.. Diddy deos well as part of a team, but not strong enough to be a solo act.
Nice cd. This is somewhat old but i liked a couple of the cuts from it and needed to buy the entire album. I would definitely recommend if you love a mix of hip hop & r&b.
