About this product

Product Information

A beautiful and timeless classic that follows Margery Fish's journey from novice gardener to expert. This classic work on creating a garden was first published in 1956. We Made a Garden is the story of how Margery Fish, the leading gardener of the 1960s, and her husband Walter transformed an acre of wilderness into a stunning cottage garden, still open to the public at East Lambrook Manor, Somerset, England. A quirky classic, this book details her creation of a landmark cottage garden, as well as her battles with her husband in the process, who preferred the standard suburban approach. In this beautiful and timeless work, she recounts the trails and tribulations, successes and failures, of her venture with ease and humour. Topics covered are colourful and diverse, ranging from the most suitable hyssop for the terraced garden through composting, hedges, making paths to the best time to lift and replant tulip bulbs. Her good sense, practical knowledge and imaginative ideas will encourage and inspire gardeners everywhere. It has been hailed as everything from a blueprint for the creation of a modern cottage garden to a feminist manifesto.

Book safely packaged and delivered promptly. Item as described. Very impressed by the quick delivery of this book. This is a great book (I am familiar with earlier editions) and a must have for those interested in audio recording, to get this edition for a great price was a complete no brainer. Would recommended this seller. No communication needed, really, with such a quick delivery- but clearly communicated as to dispatch. Thank you, WeBuyBooks.

  • A Break from the Weeding!

A lovely book to curl up with when you can't face the outdoor chores, or when it is raining. Margery's knowledge, experience and humour make this a very appealing read as she tells the story of her struggle to transform old orchards and neglected lawns into a gorgeous garden over the course of many years. I have to say her husband sounds like a perfect monster, chopping the heads off her efforts and forbidding her to do this and that - I'm surprised he didn't end up buried under his blessed dahlias! Oddly the book comes in a floral but otherwise plain jacket, no wording even on the spine so that it looks like a posh notebook. It does actually have pages for your own notes at the end.
