When Madness rose to greatness
Top album, possibly Madness' finest LP moment. Gems include the scathing anti-Thatcher/Falklands Blue Skinned Beast, the poignant Tiptoes and Memories as well as classic singles Our House and opus for the unemployed Tomorrow's Just Another Day. A true coming age that hints at further greatness to come.Good extras CD includes brilliant Elvis Costello reworking of Tomorrow's Just Another Day.

2 CD version of quality album well woth having, "must have" Madness tracks!
I've owned this album on cassette tape since it came out in Autumn 1982 but bought the CD because the version I've bought is a special 2CD edition with 4 tracks recorded for radio 1 plus some tracks previously on B sides, 12" singles and the 2 1982 singles Our House (Madness's only UK Number One to date)and Driving In My Car, which were rather inexplicably left off the original 1982 album. The 4 tracks recorded for Radio 1 are the great title track Rise & Fall, the single Tomorrow's Just Another Day, plus 2 other great songs, Calling Cards and Are You Coming With Me? They all actually gain something from the Radio 1 recording - slightly more bounce and feel - in comparison the original album's versions were possibly over-produced? I thoroughly recommend the album though! When it came out ... When it came out in 1982 I was particularly immediately delighted at the quality of the songwriting and thought Madness were on good form again after not thinking the album Seven was a great follow up to Absolutely. The title track is a delight, Blue Skinned Beast is one of the best songs Madness recorded and I was surprised was not a single if slightly remixed. In fact there is an interesting remix of it on CD 2 here, a re-worded Driving In My Car called Riding On My Bike, plus 2 long remixes of Our House, although one is too repetitive and I find tedious. The clincher for me in buying this 2CD version is the great slowed down Tomorrow's (Just Another Day) sung as a lounge track by one of my musical heroes, Elvis Costello! To have him collaborate on a song with Madness - well I couldn't be much happier even if they'd re-recorded What A Waste? with Ian Dury! Finally, on the 2CD version you get a useful lyrics and history of the album booklet, INCLUDING the lyrics for the rarities and obscurities of all the CD 2 songs.
