    • Fantastic power to weight ratio

Having had the 45-200 and still having the 100-300, this 100-400 was a natural progression. For what it is, it is an amazing achievement. Remarkably small, light and ergonomically comfortable it delivers a huge 16x magnification power (800mm in 35 mm terms) to MFT cameras. I used it on a Lumix GH3 on a three week safari in Zambia a few weeks ago and am very pleased with the results - particularly with the HD video. The stabilization is very good and the IQ pleasing. Subsequent trials with my new Lumix G80 (with 5 axis in-body additional stab) show a remarkable increase in stabilization and great IQ, so I am looking forward to my next field trip. Leica lens designs are great but zoom lenses are just that - one device delivering a range of focal lengths. So do not expect this lens to ...

    • Significant step upp from the 100-300mm at a price

Optically, this lens offers significantly better IQ than the original 100-300 ( which I had and sold because I needed more reach). Focus lock is fast and reliable in situations the 100-300mm would be dithering. The 100-400mm is big in the context of M43 and heavy. At eBay prices the cost is high but, in my experience, worth it if want to pull in wildlife. At full UK prices, it is very expensive and a tougher value decision. The new 100-300mm, with weather sealing and faster AF is just coming onto the market and would be worth checking out, when reviews are available. The new 100-300mm will be midway in price between the 100-400mm and the old 100-300mm. The value proposition will need careful evaluation of your planned usage.
