  • The best documentary I've seen on the subject.

I've lost count of the number of documentaries I've seen on this subject, and this one is by far the best. It is the most thoroughly researched and impartial study of a very controversial figure in a very controversial period of American history. It starts with Custer's boyhood in Michigan and ends with is widow's death in 1933, and covers pretty much everything of substance in between. It also describes in accurate detail hoe Custer had been considered to be leading a charmed life, getting through some of the heaviest fighting of the civil war without a scratch. It also describes in detail the fact that the 2nd and 3rd Battalion Commanders, Major Reno and Capt. Benteen respectively, showed a complete lack of interest in doing their job that day. They were well aware that Custer's 1st Battalion was in a firefight, and they didn't care. My only criticism, if you could even call it that, is that they didn't ask anyone with military experience to examine how the supposedly best light cavalry unit in the army a the time could have been defeated so completely in such a short time. It mentions one description of the Little Bighorn fight in which Custer was the first soldier hit, but just barely. It's the only scenario that makes sense, though. So the documentary leaves out a military analysis of Custer's last battle, but I wouldn't hold that against it. It is still the most complete, impartial, and well researched documentary on this subject.

  • Another Fantastic American Experience Documentary: the whole story of George A. Custer.

The usual great American Experience take on Custer's life and his failed battle in Montana. Many interesting facts about Custer's adventurous life and his love, Libbie, are presented. His exploits in the civil war, particularly foolhardy heroics at Gettysburg, and subsequent military career mostly out west engaging native Americans provide fascinating lead up to his famous final battle. He was self promoting and sometimes self destructive, bucking the administration at West Point and his commanders out west. But his daring was compelling to generals like Philip Sheridan so he didn't stay in any dog house for long. He had several family members with him at the Little Big Horn (2 brothers and an in-law I believe). He had a real love for his wife (and vice versa). She spent the rest of her life (till 1933!) maintaining in legacy. Highly recommend this excellent, definitive documentary.

  • Good Showing of a real-life battle

PBS Custer's Last Stand is a good presentation of the Battle at the Little Big Horn. I'm not sure if the characterization of LTC Goerge A. Custer is spot on or not.
