REVIEW OF "THE ZODIAC KILLER" DVD
Good quality DVD of "The Zodiac Killer", the first "real" film about the Zodiac ("Dirty Harry" is usually the film that gets the credit, but this one came out before "Dirty Harry" was released). It's obviously very much a "B" movie, with all no-name actors that probably had day jobs as waiters, cab drivers, etc. The real title of this film is "The Zodiak Killer", in case you are concerned with details. A lot of the dialogue is laughable (It's shot in B&W), but it's historically correct, sticking close to the known facts as of 1970 or 1971. According to Robert Graysmith, the foremost authority on The Zodiac (he was a newspaperman with one of the big SF newspapers when the killings took place), this film was released for only a one week run at the small Golden Gate Theatre in SF, which ... I've owned a VHS copy of it for years, but I'm glad to finally receive the DVD copy. Also on the DVD are two other low budget serial killer movies from the early 70s, one shot in NYC and the other in LA, both B&W. If you're a hard core student of the Zodiac or serial killers in general, you will want to add this to your collection. Obviously, it's not as polished as the other 2 Zodiac big budget films (one with Robin Tunney, the other with Jake Guylenhall & Robert Downey, Jr), but low budget films don't have name actors and big production values. I like it because it is an historical artifact, and because I collect a lot of DVDs about serial killers, because I'm fascinated by them. I leave it up to you to decide whether you want to spring for this DVD. Incidentally, there's a whole slew of low budget DVDs released about various serial killers (Zodiac, Son of Sam, Richard Speck, John Gacy, Ed Gein, etc) available either on E-Bay or Amazon that were directed by a German named Ulli Lommel. Those films use the same set of actors in almost every film. Chris
