Synopsis
This delightful memoir of Julia's years in Paris, Marseille, and Provence opens with Paul and Julia--a tall, wide-eyed girl from Pasadena who can't cook and doesn't speak a word of French--disembarking in Le Havre, and ends with the launching of the two "Mastering" cookbooks and Julia winning the heart of America as "The French Chef.", The bestselling story of Julia's years in France in her own words--and the basis for the film Julie & Julia , starring Meryl Streep and Amy Adams. Although she would later singlehandedly create a new approach to American cuisine with her cookbook Mastering the Art of French Cooking and her television show The French Chef , Julia Child was not always a master chef. Indeed, when she first arrived in France in 1948 with her husband, Paul, who was to work for the USIS, she spoke no French and knew nothing about the country itself. But as she dove into French culture, buying food at local markets and taking classes at the Cordon Bleu, her life changed forever with her newfound passion for cooking and teaching. Julia's unforgettable story--struggles with the head of the Cordon Bleu, rejections from publishers to whom she sent her now-famous cookbook, a wonderful, nearly fifty-year long marriage that took the Childs across the globe--unfolds with the spirit so key to Julia's success as a chef and a writer, brilliantly capturing one of America's most endearing personalities., The bestselling story of Julia's years in France in her own words --and the basis for the film Julie & Julia , starring Meryl Streep and Amy Adams. From the moment the ship docked in Le Havre in the fall of 1948 and Julia watched the well-muscled stevedores unloading the cargo to the first perfectly "soigne" meal that she and her husband, Paul, savored in Rouen en route to Paris, where he was to work for the USIS, Julia had an awakening that changed her life. Soon this tall, outspoken gal from Pasadena, California, who didn't speak a word of French and knew nothing about the country, was steeped in the language, chatting with purveyors in the local markets, and enrolled in the Cordon Bleu. After managing to get her degree despite the machinations of the disagreeable "directrice" of the school, Julia started teaching cooking classes herself, then teamed up with two fellow "gourmettes, "Simone Beck and Louisette Bertholle, to help them with a book they were trying to write on French cooking for Americans. Throwing herself heart and soul into making it a unique and thorough teaching book, only to suffer several rounds of painful rejection, is part of the behind-the-scenes drama that Julia reveals with her inimitable gusto and disarming honesty. Filled with the beautiful black-and-white photographs that Paul loved to take when he was not battling bureaucrats, as well as family snapshots, this memoir is laced with wonderful stories about the French character, particularly in the world of food, and the way of life that Juliaembraced so wholeheartedly. Above all, she reveals the kind of spirit and determination, the sheer love of cooking, and the drive to share that with her fellow Americans that made her the extraordinary success she became. "Le voici. Et bon appetit! ", The bestselling story of Julia's years in France--and the basis for Julie & Julia , starring Meryl Streep and Amy Adams--in her own words. • My LIfe In France - Julia Child

This is a must have for all serious cooks. Anyone who knows anything about the culinary world, knows Julia Child! This book is a wonderful recounting of Julia Child's days in France. In her own words, Julia tells her captivating story of where she fell in love with French food and found her "true calling." You can tell she poured her heart and soul into this book. My life's ambition has been to study at Le Cordon Bleu in Paris, so I must say I had a huge bias for this book. Although her time at Le Cordon Bleu only accounts for a very small portion of the book itself, it was a major influence on Julia's life. This book is filled with beautiful black-and-white photographs and Julia's engaging manner of story telling bring these years to life for the reader. By all accounts, she lived ...

    • Best book EVER...

I couldn't wait to read this book after seeing the movie, "Julie & Julia". I have a knew found love and respect for Julia Child and Paul Child. They both led such inspiring, scary, and adventuress lives. In a time of uncertainty they made the best of their time during and after WWII. It's so inspiring to read how they traveled, stood up to their convictions and had the courage to do so with such passion. Julia is a wonderful role model for today's young women. She never backed down from her beliefs whether it be political, in the kitchen, or in the class room. She was a force to be wreckened with and stayed true to herself and those she collaborated with. I was always a fan but not to the degree I am now. She writes so passionately about her husband, friends, travels around Europe, and the ...

    • So informative and endearing.

For whatever reason(s), I have been drawn to and fascinated by Julia (and Paul) Child ever since watching the movie "Julie and Julia". This book confirms and elaborates on what I learned earlier. Very enjoyable and something I will display proudly on my coffee table along with "France is a Feast", which showcased Paul's photography. I highly recommend both books to Child admirers!
