The best of the best of Shirley Bassey
If you love things and music inspired by James Bond, this will be a good addition. As we all know, Ms. Shirley Bassey with her fantastic massive voice is the only singer in the World who sang three main songs for James Bond movies - "Goldfinger", "Diamonds Are Forever" and "Moonraker". First two of them you will hear in this greatest hits compilation. Besides all other songs are big heats. Remixing gives them new breeze and freshness. Only one song I miss in this compilation - "The Rhytm Divine".If you love things and music inspired by James Bond, this will be a good addition. Classic Tracks Updated to A Modern Groove
This is the US version of the Shirley Bassey remix CD "Diamonds are Forever" which for some reason contains three more tracks than the UK version (despite Dame Bassey's UK fans being far more loyal than her fickle US ones - certainly in terms of album sales!) As with the risk of updating any classic tracks to a more contemporary sound these can paradoxically end up sounding more dated than the original with the passage of time (the CD was released in 2000 and the sound on some tracks is very much of that time period and the passing pop trends popular at that time - but not any more!) Personal highlights include "Never, Never, Never" which sounds much more chilled-out than the original and "Where Do I Begin" (the theme from Love Story) which has had a very groovy makeover. The "Diamonds ... This is the US version of the Shirley Bassey remix CD "Diamonds are Forever" which for some reason contains three more tracks than the UK version (despite Dame Bassey's UK fans being far more loyal than her fickle US ones - certainly in terms of album sales!) There are two versions of "Light My Fire", neither of which sound better than the original. The artwork for this US version features a computer generated tube-like female figure who looks absolutely nothing like Dame Bassey, and the artwork for the UK version was much classier featuring an artist's image of Dame Bassey in long evening frock against a celestial setting (although this image is partially superimposed on the actual US CD). Those who bought Dame Bassey's recently released "Get the Party Started" Album will be familiar with the approach adopted as that album also included a number of classic tracks (along with two new songs) which had been remixed (often to a much classier standard). The "Big Spender" remix track on "Get the Party Started" is a much better version than the one which appears on this album (the only classic track to appear on both remix albums). I think why some remixes fail is that Dame Bassey is a lady of some class and her music should have a certain amount of respect shown to it. Cutting up the tracks and over-sampling her voice just come across as tacky (she can after all sing unlike some of today's briefly popular "singers"). Excessive oversampling was something which the "Get the Party Started" album avoided. The US version of this CD contains the extra tracks of "Moonraker" (good) and extended versions of "Diamonds are Forever" and "Light my Fire" (both poor unfortunately!)

I had heard parts of this CD in the past, so I was interested in hearing the full length versions of tracks included. To be honest, it's a bit hit and miss. The remixes of 'Where Do I Begin', 'Goldfinger', 'Diamonds Are Forever' and 'Light My Fire' are for me worth the price I paid, but had I paid the normal full asking price for a CD I would have been somewhat disappointed. If you want a remix of 'Big Spender', the cd 'Get The Party Started' released in 2007 is a much better option. That remix is irrisistable, the one included here is merely OK. The album finishes with 'If You Go Away' by which point you'll be wishing the remixers had gone away as the tune and lyrics do not seem to fit the beat that has been applied to it.
