  • Good delivery, mediocre program

The DVD arrived promptly and works very well. I gave this 5 stars because of that. However, this is not Ken Burns best effort. He hits some of the high points of radio technology history, but it seems lifeless and bland. Too much time on Deforest and too little of the other pioneers who developed radio. I'd love to see some producer do an expansive history of the technology as well as the business and programming of early radio.

  • The story of the first paperless mass communications medium.

For people who enjoy science and engineering history, this is the story of three men who moved wireless communication into the realm of being a powerful communications medium. And while radio in today's world is no longer the dominate media form that the Internet is, nonetheless there are interesting parallels between the two technologies. History is our teacher and important lessons can be learned from it.

  • Empire of the Air

This is a masterful documentary by Ken Burns, who also produced "The Civil War." I had seen the video before the year it came out (1992?) and had waited for years for PBS to air it again. Having been in broadcasting myself, I have a great interest in the history of the medium, and of the many inventions that laid the foundation for the mass media. The DVD I purchased was at a great price, and was high-quality new unopened. I have found EBay to be a great alternative to purchasing items at full retail.

  • History buffs- buy it and learn just how much you don't know !

It is an excellent presentation of the period of communication development in the 1930's-1950's. While brief in time, it was a period of significent development and marketing in the fast moving period of radio and the emergence of the TV era. It portrays the original developers of radio and the marketing genius of David Sarnoff of NBC fame. It is a must own for History buffs.

  • Empire of the Air

Very few people understand the history of radio in the US. This portrayal of the main contributors gives one a clear understanding of the history.
