The Bachmann 2-4-2 is a great engine for the price. It has very good detail and performs well. Converting the engine to DCC with sound was a bit of a challenge, but not too difficult. The PCB is easy to access, but there is not enough space to add a decoder. So, placing the decoder in the cab is your only option. I found it impossible to remove the cab without damaging the piping, but I was able to drill a hole in the back of the boiler for the wire and use the operating doors to place the decoder on the floor of the cab. The PCB is DCC ready, but the 8 pin plug is the same size as the ones used on Ho scale engines. So, I was forced to use 18ga wire to connect the decoder to the male 8 pin plug, but I've been happy with the final results. It sounds and runs great.

First, this engine come with 3 sets of coupler and the attached couplers need to changed out to fit G scale cars that I have. The engines pull good but could be a little heavier, they should be as heavy if not heavier than the 0-4-0 porter which they were intended to replace. It appears that these can easily be converted to DCC and come with a built in speaker and smoke. I can pull probably 5 to 7 cars with the engine. I now have 3 of these engines to pull longer trains.
