About this product

Product Information

Louis L'Amour has been best known for his ability to capture the spirit and drama of the authentic American West. Now he guides his readers to an even more distant frontier--the enthralling lands of the twelfth century. Warrior, lover, and scholar, Kerbouchard is a daring seeker of knowledge and fortune bound on a journey of enormous challenge, danger, and revenge. Across Europe, over the Russian steppes, and through the Byzantine wonders of Constantinople, Kerbouchard is thrust into the treacheries, passions, violence, and dazzling wonders of a magnificent time. From castle to slave galley, from sword-racked battlefields to a princess's secret chamber, and ultimately, to the impregnable fortress of the Valley of Assassins, The Walking Drum is a powerful adventure in an ancient world that you will find every bit as riveting as Louis L'Amour's stories of the American West.

  • Thoroughly enjoyable and once I started, I switched of the telly and read it from start to finish.

As a keen fan of the historical novel, I have enjoyed this one by Lamour, who is not noted for writing in this genre. I am left with the regret that he did not write more historical novels as he is a master at setting the context of his stories which never fail to capture the reader's imagination.

  • Excellent and unusual medieval novel

Louis L'Amour was probably the best known and possibly also the best of the western writers of the latter part of the twentieth century. On occasion his works wandered into the realm of the historical novel as background to other series, but The Walking Drum is, I believe, the only stand alone novel of the genre he produced. Unfortunately L'Amour died before writing the talked about sequel. The story is set in 12th. Century Europe and Asia Minor and follows the adventures of Kerbouchard, a young man from Brittany who is sold into slavery after a neighbour raids his lands and kills his family. After finding his freedom he sets out to avenge his mother's death and find his captive father. Kerbouchard is not just warrior, but also a scholar, merchant, and physician and travels across Europe ...
