  • From the Absolutely Brilliant to the Absolutely Dreadful

    The first 3 episodes of this series are pure art and have much to recommend them. The scripts, the acting, the production and even the mildly innovative camerawork are all exemplary. There is some ambivalent social comment and you gradually discover fragments of Marker's past. The subsequent episodes thereafter, however, forego all that, and become progressively second rate and even embarrassingly bad. The central character ceases to develop and instead of the odds being against him, just about everything is stacked in his favour - a rather inexplicable change in fortune, and, one might say, focus. For much of the time (and with a few exceptions) you get the feeling that the actors are having a self-indulgent and self-congratulatory holiday. Storylines become narrow and one ...
