It is ironic that Haxan destroyed the career of director Christensen - had he made this film in more "relaxed" times he would have been lauded as an avant garde director supreme. He would be enjoying the same artistic freedoms and adulation as David Lynch does today. The crime of Haxan was that it upset the religious sensibilities of the day (and like L'Age D'Or was banned just about everywhere). This sort of background will attract the arthouse-type viewers today (indeed there is a William Burroughs narrated version of the film also included on the disc). At cocktail parties they can name-drop "Haxan" into the conversation, say long words about it, and sound cool. But do not be mistaken. This film is not a pretentious confusion of images. It starts as quite a twee documentary which is fun in itself, and proceeds to its main theme - a twisting story of witchcraft and the persecution of witches (be they actual witches or just female scapegoats). A serious subject and one that batters religious hypocrisy without fear. But this is a film with humour too - the devil is well played (actors obviously had a feel for the devil in the 1920's - the comparision with the role in Faust is inevitable (and as equally well acted)). I have rambled enough. Do not be put-off by the arthouse types. Please see this film. It draws you in with intimacy and leaves your brain clear & thoughtful. Thank God for directors like Christensen.Read full review
