Synopsis
The Man-Eaters of Tsavo is the basis for the film The Ghost and the Darkness , starring Val Kilmer. St. Martin's is proud to present a new series of the greatest classics in the literature of hunting and adventure, chosen from the personal library of writer and big game hunter Peter Hathaway Capstick. These showcase volumes will once again make available the true masterpieces of Africana to collectors, armchair hunters, sportsmen, and readers at large. Considered one of the greatest man-eating sagas of all time, The Man-Eaters of Tsavo is the firsthand account of the infamous Tsavo lions. These lions--who for nearly a year terrorized East Africa--succeeded in bringing the construction of a railway line to a complete halt, and have been credited with the deaths of some one hundred people. Written by the legendary officer who shot these lions and risked death several times in the attempt, The Man-Eaters of Tsavo is not only the story of this breathtaking hunt, but of Lieutenant-Colonel Patterson's other adventures in the African bush. "I think that the incident of the Uganda man-eating lions...is the most remarkable account of which we have any record."--Theodore Roosevelt, St. Martin's is proud to present a new series of the greatest classics in the literature of hunting and adventure, chosen from the personal library of writer and big game hunter Peter Hathaway Capstick. • If you like the movie, I really think you will enjoy this book.

I very much like to read and learn history, and historically based events. The movie based of this book, is one of my favorites, and I would very much recommend reading this book to learn the real story, though not very different in substance, mainly just the absence or presences of people from the book to the movie, which happens with "based on a true story." The book is about 300 pages long, and the man eater story only covers about the first 100 pages, but the rest of the book, follows the construction of the railroad, and different hunts, and close calls of Patterson, which are often risky and hair raising. I have finished this book, and my daughter has looked forward to reading as well.

  • Loved it, it is now in my Safari collection along with Capstic and Ruark.

  • Real African adventure

A great book covering Peterson's experiences in Africa, including the famous incident at Tsavo. A great read for anyone interested in that period of history of Africa.
