About this product

Product Information

NATIONAL BOOK AWARD WINNER - NATIONAL BESTSELLER - In this deeply compelling novel and epic milestone of American literature, a nameless narrator tells his story from the basement lair of the Invisible Man he imagines himself to be. He describes growing up in a Black community in the South, attending a Negro college from which he is expelled, moving to New York and becoming the chief spokesman of the Harlem branch of "the Brotherhood," before retreating amid violence and confusion. Originally published in 1952 as the first novel by a then unknown author, it remained on the bestseller list for sixteen weeks and established Ralph Ellison as one of the key writers of the century. The book is a passionate and witty tour de force of style, strongly influenced by T.S. Eliot's The Waste Land , James Joyce, and Dostoevsky.

  • A classic - Grows with time

I liked the fact that this is a classic that you always learn something new from. I've got an old worn copy that I wrote in when I read it the first time in high school. I pull it out from time to time to see my growth as a thinker and a writer. I don't know that it was as good as I had remembered at the time. But I think of life lessons that we can learn from this novel. It is no wonder that Ellison created this book and essentially stopped. I would highly recommend this for any high school student that does not have this on their required reading. If nothing else, it is great preparation for college english classes.

  • Invisible Man

Bought it for school, good book. Unquestionably, Ellison’s book is a powerfully imagined and written with a savage, wryly humorous gusto. It contains many scenes which are brought off with great brio and a striking felicity of detail. To my mind, however, it has faults that cannot simply be shrugged off—occasional overwriting, stretches of fuzzy thinking, and a tendency to waver, confusingly, between realism and surrealism.

  • Great book for the price

The book is in good condition with minor wear around the cover. No markings, writing, or highlighting inside the book.
