About this product

Product Information

Children: The Challenge gives the key to parents who seek to build trust and love in their families, and raise happier, healthier, and better behaved children. Based on a lifetime of experience with children -- their problems, their delights, their challenges -- Dr. Rudolf Dreikurs, one of America's foremost child psychiatrists presents an easy-to-follow program that teaches parents how to cope with the common childhood problems that occur from toddler years through early adolescence. This warm and reassuring reference helps parents to understand their children's actions better, giving them the guidance necessary to discipline lovingly and effectively, all while fostering a healthy environment in which children will grow and develop into successful teenagers and adults.

  • Keep this one handy!

This book was recommended by the staff at my child's Montessori School. The staff based a several week parenting course on the content of this book. Although I could not attend the course, I found the book an eye opening tutorial on how I, as a parent, can change my entire framework for approaching parenting and make my child, myself, the entire household more harmonious. This book is not a "tip-based" book or a technique book. It describes a way of being with your child, and how to change your own attitude about "misbehavior" that will change how you perceive household issues. I read the book in small sections, as it was all new to me, and too dense to read quickly or in only a few settings. I rarely purchase this type of book, but am glad I did, as I think I will reference it many ...

  • Interesting and Helpful

My mom used this book when raising 5 children. She got me a copy when I was a young mother, asking for help. Now, with a college student, high schooler and 5th grader, I bought a couple of copies for friends who asked for help with child rearing. I think its best asset is the use of natural/logical consequences, and how to avoid getting into a power struggle. The book is lacking, in that the situational examples have not been updated for today's society, i.e. there is a story where a mother leaves her children in the car while she grocery shops in peace and quiet. One of the children is 3 years old ... can you spell J-A-I-L? That does add a comic element to the book. I definitely recommend having this as a resource.

  • A Very Helpful Read

This book really opened my eyes to my kids and what makes them really tick. I finally am able to understand them better and not hold particular behaviors against them. After reading this book, I feel that I am much better prepared to deal with my kids in a positive and understanding way. I can tell a difference with the application of some of the suggestions in this book on managing behavior problems. There are some new approaches to parenting that I had never even thought of. This book is great. I believe it truely is a classic parenting book that no parent should forgo reading.

  • Great book, so timeless and relevant!

Very intelligently written. Full of solid practical information to help with the most amazing journey on earth, parenthood!
