"Soul searching and human . . . A moving personal testament to courage."--Herbert Mitgang, The New York Times "An unforgettable reading experience . . . All But My Life is one of the most beautifully written human documents I have ever read. In this respect it is as sensitive and 'disturbing' a story as is The Diary of Anne Frank ."-- Library Journal "Gerda Weissmann Klein moves you, and not just because the story she can tell is so horrific. It is the passion with which she looked through the horror and found a heart-felt and basic goodness in humanity . . . All But My Life is filled with wonderful acts of decency and normalcy, even as she describes three years in labor camps and three months of a forced winter march from Germany to Czechoslovakia."--Royal Ford, The Boston Globe, An unforgettable reading experience . . . Special woman, a special book

This story is so many things. This author tells this story beautifully. The scenes she describes, her family that you meet and the horrors of the events are stunning, poignant and impactful. It is an amazing read written by a very special , gifted woman. The story and the author stays with you.

  • All But My Life

Having listened to the author featured on the cover of our high school history book, The Americans, I wanted to read her autobiography. A gripping story of being forced from her home and separated from her family by the Nazis, the book left me with the image of Gerda in the ski boots crucial to her survival holding her dying best friend in her arms as the girl forced a promise from Gerda to hold on for one more week. Not only a survival story, but a love story, Gerda Weissman's writing grips the reader. Since reading it, I have purchased many copies and passed it to students, strong and weak readers alike, who read it in awe.

  • Good reading!

As I am reading and learning more about the Holocaust, this is a very good book to read. It is compelling and is not easy to forget the experiences the author went through, as a survivor. I would recommend this book wholeheartedly.
