In a time before " Apocalypto"
Made in 1963, this movie has the loosers in a Mayan civil war fleeing to live to fight another day. Their king Balam( George Chakiris) leads them in a sea voyage to a new land. A Native American tribe lead by Black Eagle( Yul Brynner)is scouting these invaders when he is captured. His wounds are treated by the future Queen ( Shirley Anne Field) so that he can be a sacrifical offering to the Gods. While Black Eagles tribe is mounting a rescue ,Balam's Mayan enemies are tracking them down. There is an epic battle on the steps of a Mayan Pyramid and the victors will end up controlling this new world. This older movie hold up surprising well. The American Indians are before the arrival of the Conquistador horses. Balams tribe are armed with spears, clubs and bows. My main fault with the ... My main fault with the movie / besides the "White" Mayans/ are that Balams enemies are armed with metal swords. ( ? ). A little research would have proably armed them with Obsidian baded clubs. Even so it is worth your time to watch or own. Yul Brynner was in the running for "Sparticus" and it is easy to imagine that he could have carried it off after seeing his portrayal as Black Eagle in this movie.
