About this product

Product Information

Discovered in the attic in which she spent the last years of her life, Anne Frank's remarkable diary has become a world classic--a powerful reminder of the horrors of war and an eloquent testament to the human spirit. In 1942, with the Nazis occupying Holland, a thirteen-year-old Jewish girl and her family fled their home in Amsterdam and went into hiding. For the next two years, until their whereabouts were betrayed to the Gestapo, the Franks and another family lived cloistered in the "Secret Annexe" of an old office building. Cut off from the outside world, they faced hunger, boredom, the constant cruelties of living in confined quarters, and the ever-present threat of discovery and death. In her diary Anne Frank recorded vivid impressions of her experiences during this period. By turns thoughtful, moving, and surprisingly humorous, her account offers a fascinating commentary on human courage and frailty and a compelling self-portrait of a sensitive and spirited young woman whose promise was tragically cut short. Praise for The Diary of a Young Girl "A truly remarkable book." -- The New York Times "One of the most moving personal documents to come out of World War II." -- The Philadelphia Inquirer "There may be no better way to commemorate the fiftieth anniversary of the end of World War II than to reread The Diary of a Young Girl, a testament to an indestructible nobility of spirit in the face of pure evil." -- Chicago Tribune "The single most compelling personal account of the Holocaust . . . remains astonishing and excruciating." -- The New York Times Book Review "How brilliantly Anne Frank captures the self-conscious alienation and na ve self-absorption of adolescence." -- Newsday

  • A haunting book that you return to over many years.

I had to read the Diary of Anne Frank for my school exams; a few years later I read it again. This time I felt as though I got to know this tragic teenager, and wished that she could have survived the holocaust. Nowadays I’m convinced that I did not really know her after all. For example, Anne’s sense of humour does not emerge from the diary, such as her nickname of “Mrs Quack-Quack”. Moreover, after the family’s betrayal Anne’s relationship with her mother blossomed, and her fundamental belief in the goodness of mankind possibly changed in the dreadful concentration camps. Some survivors who knew her have said that if Anne had survived the war, she would probably have gone into politics to make a positive difference. Contemporaries also reveal that some people in hiding at Prisengracht ...

  • The diary of Anne Frank

This book is stunning. It overwhelms me to think that is more that just a true story. In fact every word is an outpouring of a young mind experiencing life in the midst of the holocaust and in hiding. This book is haunting, as it should be, and impossible to forget.

  • A must read!!

I’ve wanted to read this book for a very long time but never had the chance but now that I own it I’m already past half of the book. An amazing documentary of a history that should never be forgotten... This book has made me a huge fan of Anne Frank and I really recommend it to anyone who enjoys reading about history or just likes reading or writing diaries :)
