Synopsis
This bestselling text introduces descriptive inorganic chemistry in a less rigorous, less mathematical way. The book uses the periodic table as basis for understanding chemical properties and uncovering relationships between elements in different groups. Unique in "Descriptive Inorganic Chemistry" is the chapter tying numerous trends and commonalities between the groups. Rayner-Canham and Overton's text also familiarizes students with the historical background of inorganic chemistry as well as with its crucial applications (especially in regard to industrial processes and environmental issues), resulting in a comprehensive appreciation and understanding of the field and the role it will play in their fields of further study. • A solid inorganic chem book

I bought this book for my Inorganic Chem class. The book is devoid of color with the exception of the covers, making it very boring to read at times. My professor said he only recently received the first color inorganic book he's ever seen, so you're not missing out on anything. It's fairly easy to read for a college level text. The 4th edition has a weblink as chapter 23 (probably because it was not ready in time to print). However, I followed that link as printed in the book and it is not correct. The publisher's site moved, with no re-direct. There are 2 additional appendices online also.

  • Great chemistry book

I had to buy this book for my Inorganic Chemistry course and I love it. It is written very well and explains things thouroughly. While most text books are wordy and require you to scan and hunt for important information, I actually enjoy reading this text book and not just skimming for key points. It is all black and white print, and isn't clouded with a bunch of flashy pictures. Any pictures or diagrams are clear and concise. The questions after each chapter are actually helpful in directing you toward understanding the material better. The only frustrating thing is that there are no answers to the study questions in the book, even the odd problems. On the plus side, it creates an opportunity for study group discussions. The problems are never impossibly difficult and we can ...

  • Wordy

I bought this book for an inorganic chemistry course. What the professor seems to be able to describe superbly in two sentences is turned into a four-page essay in this book. It is the first time I've ever preferred a professor's descriptions to those of a textbook. It's not a BAD book, but cutting out some of the unnecessary wordiness would improve it.

  • satisfied with purchase

I purchased it for my son for school. I do not love it, I dont even like it. It actually hurt me to buy it, as do all the books I have had to buy for him. Hopefully he will be a whole lot smarter than I am.
