About this product

Product Information

The book that helped define a genre: Heat is a beloved culinary classic, an adventure in the kitchen and into Italian cuisine, by Bill Buford, author of Dirt . Bill Buford was a highly acclaimed writer and editor at the New Yorker when he decided to leave for a most unlikely destination: the kitchen at Babbo, one of New York City's most popular and revolutionary Italian restaurants. Finally realizing a long-held desire to learn first-hand the experience of restaurant cooking, Buford soon finds himself drowning in improperly cubed carrots and scalding pasta water on his quest to learn the tricks of the trade. His love of Italian food then propels him further afield: to Italy, to discover the secrets of pasta-making and, finally, how to properly slaughter a pig. Throughout, Buford stunningly details the complex aspects of Italian cooking and its long history, creating an engrossing and visceral narrative stuffed with insight and humor. The result is a hilarious, self-deprecating, and fantasically entertaining journey into the heart of the Italian kitchen.

Dvd arrived quickly and well packaged and taken care of. The item was listed as acceptable and met all of my needs but here's a quick description of what I got: Some wear is visible on the plastic sleeve on the outside of the case. The inside leaflet was still there! The disk has about 3 very notable scratches, although none are bigger than about 2 centimeters. Little to no grime anywhere on the product. Great service!

  • A LITTLE HEAT

"Heat" carries the right amount of sarcastic wit and humor, and Buford is hilarious. A friend gave me the book to read and she thought it was probably an exaggeration, more than the truth,on what it is like to work in the kitchen of a 4 star restaurant. I seriously doubt it is. According to the author, New York City kitchens are quite small and cramped, and the chefs are eccentric and weird, at the best of times. Some spots in the book were a little difficult to get through, but over-all I would recommend it to anyone who appreciates great food and witty sarcasm.

  • Hot Stuff

I've dined at several of Batali's N.Y. restaurants and thought this book would be interesting reading. It was more than that. Buford's italian and Babbo experiences were fascinating, both from a historical perspective and in the way he takes you through the many facets of becoming a chef. I learned much, and will never again order the special. It's Bufords gift to us that he has chosen to write rather than practice what he has paid such high dues to become.

  • Great reading about fine dining food - you'll want to lick the pages!

Heat is a great read to learn about food, what it's like to be inside a restaurant kitchen and to meet Mario Batali and Dario the Butcher. Hilarious and descriptive writing style!
