About this product

Product Information

The Psalms of David James S. Freemantle Foreword by Stephen Freemantle Back in print, The Psalms of David is a unique, beautifully illustrated edition of the revered religious work, also known as the Book of Psalms. The lifework of a little known genius, this facsimile edition of a magnificent hand-painted illumination of the Psalms of David is a stunning tribute to love and spiritual devotion. Born in India, James Freemantle traveled through the Middle East during his years in the British Army. Shortly after his second marriage, he began this hand-lettered, illustrated volume for his beloved bride, Clara. For the next thirty years, he periodically worked to transfer the psalms into a book that would physically match the lyrical beauty of the poetry. Throughout the book one finds the brilliantly colored blooms of India: the jacaranda, the flame-of-the-forest, huge yellow laburnums, brilliant poinsettias, and highly scented mimosa. The pages are alive with kingfishers and larks, drummers and hoppie butterflies, storks and pheasants. There are pictures of the lake near Freemantle's home, the nearby Brahmin temple, and the view from the train as he went up to school in the hills. Scenes from his travels in the army, Middle Eastern harbors and villages, and copies of illustrations from Victorian travel books reveal his draftsman's training in the accuracy of every detail. A labor of love, a work of art, a volume to treasure, this illuminated edition of the King James version of the Psalms of David is the perfect gift for all seasons.

    The Psalms of David

I have purchased several copies of this book, and given most of them as gifts. This is a unique book, with beautiful illustrations. This is a great addition to my home library. The artwork is pleasant to look at while reading the scriptures.

  • The Psalms of David illus. by James Freemantle

This is an amazing book. It almost sounds dull. But this man spent over 38 years illustrating and illuminating the book of Psalms in the King James Version Translation. Years after James Freemantle's death his son and heir has republished his father's beautiful gift to his wife. The illustrations do not necessarily illustrate the Biblical content of the particular Psalm on the page. They are mostly flowers, and scenes from nature or landscapes from various parts of the world. (For example Psalm 100 has violets on the page.) Some scenes are Biblical costumed figures, and some are not. He must have used colored inks and some paint. There are beautiful flowers and other scenes from India where they were living. Whatever the subject matter the book is worth taking your time to think about ...

  • The Psalms of David

The story of the illustrator is fascinating, although much is unknown. James Swan Freewater wrote all 150 psalms of the King James Bible in his unique and varied Calligraphic and painterly style. Every page is beautifully illustrated. In 1934 Mr. Freewater died of pneumonia one month after completion of his work in progress (over thirty years). The book was not published until 1982. Being an artist, this is an excellent way for me to make the most of my daily meditation time. Now that I have this "gem", I would never want to be without it.

  • Beautiful Comfort

This was given to me as a gift. It is breathtakingly beautiful, in similar artistic style of Edith Holden's "Country Diary of an Edwardian Lady". The simple dust jacket is a small sampling of what the pages inside behold . Each psalm is noted with a roman numeral, which makes it a nice refresher course for those rusty with their roman numerals. Every page is hand-written with beautiful script, adorned with muted color drawings of creation. When I feel stressed, I read familiar Psalms in this book, and am calmed and comforted. This book makes a lovely, unique gift that keeps on giving.
