"The world has a great writer in Erich Maria Remarque. He is a craftsman of unquestionably first rank, a man who can bend language to his will. Whether he writes of men or of inanimate nature, his touch is sensitive, firm, and sure."-- The New York Times Book Review, "The world has a great writer in Erich Maria Remarque. Synopsis
Considered by many the greatest war novel of all time, All Quiet on the Western Front is Erich Maria Remarque's masterpiece of the German experience during World War I. I am young, I am twenty years old; yet I know nothing of life but despair, death, fear, and fatuous superficiality cast over an abyss of sorrow. . . . This is the testament of Paul B umer, who enlists with his classmates in the German army during World War I. They become soldiers with youthful enthusiasm. But the world of duty, culture, and progress they had been taught breaks in pieces under the first bombardment in the trenches. Through years of vivid horror, Paul holds fast to a single vow: to fight against the principle of hate that meaninglessly pits young men of the same generation but different uniforms against one another . . . if only he can come out of the war alive. An unvarnished, realistic view of WWI from the eyes of a man who was a part of that historitcal event.

Used books are such a great item to purchase. New or used, you get the same content! this item was in great shape, the price was exceedingly fair. Just a great deal all the way around.

    • Most critical review

Great book could have been great!

Book came underlined, written on many papers, etc. Should have gotten more expensive one. My problem, not yours. Looks like great writing.

    • Not a boring book about war and old people

Forced to read in school for a class, I was expecting a boring war book. Was surprised by the depth of character development and by some of the harder to swallow truths of war. The characters were my age at the time. I remember returning to class the day we had been assigned to read the one scene—if you’ve read it, you know the one—we all sat down in complete silence, only looked at each other to say WOW we were not prepared for that. Right in the feels.

    • Not just a great war novel - a GREAT novel

All Quiet is the best war novel ever written for several reasons. First the characters are engaging and pull the reader into a gripping story that reveals the horrors of WWI. Second, although about the war, the book is truly about mankind, brotherhood, and the lost innocence of youth. Third, Remarque brings to life every chapter with vivid imagery. You can almost feel the chlorine gas choking you and smell the stench of the dead. Lastly, like all great novels, this story evokes strong emotion; laughter, sadness, fear, disbelief, and even anger. I have required my World History students to read it every year, and not a one of them has been disappointed. I wish I could say that about every book I ask them to read.

    • Wow.

By far the best book I have ever read. It's a chilling masterpiece and an extremely sad account of the savagery these young men had to endure. Anyone even mildly interested in history or in the darkness of humanity will find this book heartbreaking, yet breathstopping.
