Following the incident in Nov 2010 with an improvised explosive device on a US bound aircraft in November, all packages to the US (and passing via/through the US) are now subject to stricter screening by US authorities. Increased security measures enforced by the United States Department of Homeland Security means that mail entering the US from around the world and including the UK that would normally be sent via passenger aircraft must now travel by other means including by land/surface and cargo planes. Both these have meant significant delays of 3-4 weeks in the delivery of incoming mail to the US, especially airmail parcels (this is the service we normally use for shipping).
