On 13 September 1931 the Schneider Trophy was won outright for Britain on Southampton Water by Flt Lt John Boothman flying Supermarine S6B, S1595, with a record-breaking average speed of 379.08mph. Ralph Pegram relates the story of the Schneider Trophy competitions and describes the development of British high-speed seaplane designs. He examines the anatomy of the S6B (including the Rolls-Royce R engine), as well as giving rare insights into its flying characteristics and how it was maintained, operated and - of course - raced in the final competition.

Trophy winner of a publication
This really is an excellent publication on a truly historic aircraft. Passion - a life without passion is existence , the author has passion for the subject and allay this with some incredible photo's and we have a book to really impress. I crave detail and here with diagrams are explained many many details, the management of heat dispersal from that colossus engine output is particularly welcome. I would have preferred more on the engine but that would be a subject in itself, without the engine the plane would be nothing really, as where the engine without the plane is really something. i.e. fitted to Bluebird, Thunderbolt, Miss England etc If I could have one plane in my hanger it would be a Supermarine S series,then perhaps Gloster Napier. If only this book was the size of Encyclopaedia Britannica , however, it is a welcome addition to my Schneider shelf and trust Haynes are proud to have their name on it, impressive all round.
