Since the Royal Commission on Medical Education reported in 1968, there has been no detailed discussion of the organization of postgraduate medical education in the National Health Service and the administrative and financial implications if such changes are to be made. This book fills that gap. The material is organized within a `demand and supply' framework: demand from employers, notably the NHS, and from individual doctors, and supply provided by various institutions - the NHS, universities, royal colleges, faculties and higher training committees, and research bodies. The areas of responsibility and financial commitments of these institutions and of government departments, the General Medical Council and the Council for Postgraduate Medical Education are identified. The book shows medical staffing trends and GMC registration trends, details of pass candidates for college higher qualifications, and other information drawn from many sources. Doctors working in Britain, and overseas doctors planning to visit Britain; medical students; NHS managers and administrators, health authority members and others closely associated with, or interested in postgraduate education and training and medical manpower.
