As other people have pointed out in the years since this was first released, it is a flawed effort. The good? Combat is well done and it's remarkably faithful to the D&D v.3.5 rules. However, it's buggy and the role-playing is thin. Fortunately, a decade of development by a rabid fanbase has resulted in a number of mods which address the bugs, add better AI and more encounters. Playing the modded version has been even better than the vanilla (albeit patched) version included on the disk. I ran the original version with the patches and enjoyed it immensely but felt it was over too soon. It was good enough that I wanted more and the free mod packs provide that. OK as it is, it can be made great with comparatively little effort.

I consider anything older than about a decade "retro" though purists may disagree. I am enjoying this game, though I am not greatly impressed. This is no doubt the result of playing NWN & NWN2 for over a decade. They are in every way superior. However, it is a good, "low intensity" game and is well done, for its era. I gave it a "yes" on all of the categories (graphics, game play and value) because I appreciate it for being faithful to the D&D 3.5 rules, for the most part. Also the graphics, while not exciting, are smooth and non-glitchy, at least so far. By far the least enjoyable aspect is the user interface, which I find a bit clumsy. The inability to rotate the viewpoint as one can do in more advanced 3D engines like NWN's is annoying. Set up is fairly involved, requiring a significant amount of patching to get a working game. This process is detailed elsewhere so I won't go into it here. I am running it on what would have been moderately high-end hardware at the time it was released, an Intel DP35DP motherboard with an Intel Core Quad, 4GB of RAM with an nVidia GT 8600 XT video card. It is running Win XP for that full on "retro" feel. I have not tried it yet under Win7 or higher, nor Wine under Linux.Read full review

OK, here's my two cents. If you are a hardcore D&D 3rd edition gamer, then, chances are, you will at least like this game. I mean, it's no KOTOR or Neverwinter Nights, but then it was written a while ago. Still, it doesn't have the same grab as Baldur's Gate or Icewind Dale. What it does have are great Feats you can't find in those games (like the monk's ability to Snatch arrows and throw them back at his enemies). It has rules that follow as closely as possible to the pen and paper game, which I think for some of you who have only ever played computer versions of D&D, this might be annoying. I loved it for the change of pace as well as because it seemed much more like the best game of chess I have ever played - you need to be very strategic during your battles rather than just rushing in and bashing things. Also, the game is beautiful. I'd say it is far more attractive than most of the early Bioware games. As well, in this game you get to have followers, which is fun and interesting. Downsides are that the side quests are often pretty boring and make you run around talking to people for what can seem like forever and the plot itself was a bit weakish. But, then again, regarding the plot, there are multiple different beginnings and endings based on your parties alignment. While this isn't a huge factor in the game, it is still a pretty neat concept. Anyhow, for ten bucks or so on eBay, this could be worth your time and money.Read full review
This is a good game, hack and slash genre. well built. If you are looking for a deep RPG, maybe you are better with ice wind dale 2, but if you are looking for a casual hack and slash game, this one is for you. The rules of table D7D are the same so it is easy to follow and it is a turn by turn based combat. If you are running the game with vista or windows 7, you must ''run it as a adminstrator'' if you don't, the game will freeze and shut down. beside that, it works great ther is a few minor bugs but nothing you shoudn't expeci for a game of the genre
I am a life-long fan of RPG games. The non-linear storyline and the endless possibilities for replay give unmatched value. This game is an excellent example of thoughtful and clever story, with unexpected twists, the ability to change the ending through your actions and the need to plan ahead if you wish to succeed in later stages. The settings are colorful and characters are memorable. Recommend to everyone who does not blast the door to enter the house:)The story is somewhat old hat, you have to defeat a great evil, and to do so you must follow its minions to its lair for the final and decisive battle. Having the ability to lead a party gives you the change to cope with all kinds of challenges and for inter-group dialogue. Magic spells, swords, mythical monsters, dungeons and the ability to live or die as a hero. All the components missing from everyday life to immersion in alternate reality. The world has day-night cycles, lots of realistic sounds to affix your attention and keep you entertained. One of my old favourites.Read full review
