John Ford's biopic of his friend Frank "Spig" Wead stars John Wayne as the decorated naval hero who went on to become the screenwriter of such films as Ford's THEY WERE EXPENDABLE and Howard Hawks's CEILING ZERO. After World War I, Frank strives to demonstrate the potential of seaplanes for use in warfare to the navy by winning a number of competitions. As the pilot's star rises, he spends time working and indulging in adolescent horseplay with his buddies while his wife, Minnie (Maureen O'Hara), languishes at home with the children that Frank barely knows. On the night when a much desired assignment to command a fighter squadron finally comes through, the pilot is paralyzed after an accidental fall. Ashamed of his condition, Frank refuses to accept consolation or help from his wife or family and will allow only his military mates, Jughead Carson (Dan Dailey) and John Price (Ken Curtis), to aid his long rehabilitation. After a bout of depression, he begins to write of his experiences, slowly transforming himself into a professional author. THE WINGS OF EAGLES features an endearing mix of low comedy and high drama expertly interwoven by Ford, who also allows a delightful spoof of himself in the form of Ward Bond's hilarious portrayal of a Fordian director named John Dodge.

      One of my favorite movies--and after recent knee surgery and being confined to no walking, etc., I needed the inspiration and encouragement this movie provides. "I'm gonna move that toe" = "I'm gonna walk without crutches."

      THE WINGS OF EAGLES

      The one & only John Wayne portrays real-life Navy hero Cmdr. Frank "Spig" Wead, the legendary WW1 Naval aviator who was highly instrumental in advancing the cause of American airpower. The great Maureen O'Hara also stars as Spig's wife, and rounding out the impressive cast in this 1957 John Ford classic is Ward Bond, Dan Dailey and Ken Curtis. At times moving and poignant, at others laugh out-loud funny, filled with action and strong patriotic themes, this is a must for any John Wayne collection. I never tire of watching this truly wonderful film, from a time when patriotism and sacrifice were not met with cynicism from Hollywood. We miss John Wayne! Steven Holt Movie Magic USA

      "The Wings of Eagles" as American as Apple Pie!

      This is an excellently produced movie that harkens back to a time when movies were suitable entertainment for the entire family. Americans were proud to be Americans. They were proud to fight, and if necessary, die for their country, and they proudly flew Old Glory on their front porch. Of course, by today's acting standards, the performances of John Wayne and the other fine actors of this film may seem somewhat dated, or in the words of my grandson, "corny". Well, I'm an admirer of this kind of flag-waving patriotism, and feel that our country was a lot better place when these ideas permeated our daily society, and morality and right and wrong were normal occurrences. The message entwined within this movie is an excellent one, of patriotism, of overcomming adversity, comradery, and ...

      The Wings of Eagles

      Another classic with Maureen O'Hara and John Wayne. It is based on the up and down life of a workaholic aviator, turned screenwriter, turned military advisor named "Spigg" Wead (John Wayne). His relationship, or lack thereof, with his wife (Maureen O'Hara) becomes a focal point of the film and supports the old adage about all work and no play. Highly interesting are the scenes where Spigg becomes paralyzed and through dedication and hope learns to walk again with the aid of braces and a cane. Must-see scenes include John Wayne landing a WWI era biplane in a pool during an officer's party at Annapolis and a couple of brawl scenes between Naval aviators and Army pilots. Enjoy!

      Fantastic movie!

      A highly enjoyable movie. And I don't think I've ever seen any John Wayne & Maureen O'Hara movie I didn't love. Great characters and lots of action along with just great entertainment.
