The Best Tom Waits
This is the first Tom Waits CD I ever heard, and it remains my favorite. Every song is memorable, every arrangement perfection. His growling, gravel voice is the perfect instrument for transporting listeners the the darkest, seediest parts of New Orleans. When I first heard "I Wish I Was in New Orleans", it made me homesick for a place I had not yet experienced.

"Small Change" . . . Tom Waits
What I love about this work of Tom Wait's is it's focus on a genre I call the dark side of the street in the thirties and forties. . "Small change got rained on with his own .38. . and much more of the same.. all supported by a cast of characters meticulously and clearly placed and spaced by Bass, devilish snare drum, and those vocals; a profane Satchmo and then the beauty of Wait's poetic insite into LIFE. . he touches all of us. Sensually, lustily, painfully grieving the one that got away. . it hurts so bad and good to have Tom to tell it like it is. This is a forever keeper, like many other oldies like Nighthawk in The Diner. . I pray Tom goes back to this stuff; there is so much left to do here!
