  • A Must Read

The best way to read this book is to listen to it first from an audiobook. The reader was exellent, and helped clarify things one might skim over if they were just reading it. It is an exellent representation of both sides and the struggle of decision to support the death penalty or not. The book clearly represents the families' pain and capacity to forgive and not forgive, especially when it comes to losing ones' children in a violent crime and wanting revenge so desperately. Sister Helen has given very valid arguments to support the unfairness of the death penalty among our legal system; if one is sufficiently wealthy to afford expensive legal counsel, one can easily escape the death penalty where a poor person cannot. There are no poor people on death row!

This book is very deeply moving. Sister Prejean is an excellent writer; direct, honest, and unsentimental. Her accounts of crime and punishment are gripping, and her arguments are persuasive. In 1982 Sister Helen Prejean became the spiritual advisor to Patrick Sonnier, the convicted killer of two teenagers who was sentenced to die in the electric chair of Louisiana's Angola State Prison. In the months before Sonnier's death, Prejean, a Roman Catholic nun, came to know a man who was as terrified as he had once been terrifying. At the same time, she came to know the families of the victims and the men whose job it was ...

  • HeartWrenching and Thought Provoking

This book blows the movie away! And that says a lot since I thought the movie was wonderful! It is such a thought provoking book. And the fact that it is based on real events makes it that much stronger. You will not finish this book and feel untouched! It does get a bit preachy, but keeping in mind it is written about a nun's perspective, it is to be expected. The book does not lecture, just encourages you to dig deep within yourself.
