Olympus Camedia FE 5500 digital compact camera review
As a serious and dedicated film photographer, this is my second digital camera and I love it. It's a point and shoot for all the family, but also offers spot metering and focus lock. 2.8 max medium range zoom lens makes framing a doddle. It seems to cope pretty well with low light shots. There's a good range of shutter speeds. The various menus offer interactive tuition on screen. You can also enlarge images in camera which is another ace creative facility. The screen is brilliant and punchy (good contrast for awkward light when viewing), but there is no optical viewfinder. With five megapixies working their magic, it offers good quality images and I can tweak in Photoshop to further boost the pictures. (Downloading to computer is easy with the Olympus CD!) The design is very light, very compact but ergonomically fine for me. (It feels good to hold, and all the controls are easily accessible, particularly the excellent 3X optical zoom. (I don't use the digital zoom,it's cr*p!) The little rechargeable battery revives in about 50 mins from flat, and as I always shoot with maximum quality, it seems to cope well with an average day's shooting, often with flash. The camera also offers tiny movies with sound. I've not even tried this facility, as I fear the worst! Drawbacks: I deny it an excellent rating because of one serious flaw. There is what feels like a photographer's lifetime of a delay between pressing the shutter and the shutter firing. This means that with any moving subject you a practically shooting "blind". Sports shots are nearly out of the question, and taking shots of say musician's playing, they will have moved after you have previewed the shot in the viewfinder. I've managed to work round this reasonably well doing shots of local bands. (You just take a number of shots and select the best ones!)It's not a problem for still life shots. Luckily my brother gave me his ancient Camedia with an old fashioned optical viewfinder that reacts faster, and I can use that for "action" shots. This cute and useful little silver beastie will not replace my film cameras or my Olympus OM2 SLR, but I carry it with me wherever I go, and it rarely lets me down. For about 45 of our bankrupt British pounds on ebay, I think it's a little gem received s/h in mint condition. It offers automatic point and shoot for everybody, and one or two key features for more advanced photographers who want a tool to carry around with them for instant shot previews or grab shots anywhere. I've had a lot of fun with the Olympus Camedia FE 5500, and use it daily.

Buying A Camedia Was No Comedy!
Sometimes when you buy something on ebay there are little imperfections with the product itself. Not so with this Olympus Camedia compact camera. Evrything was perfect, a few minor grazes on the camera but otherwise immaculate and all supplied with the charger, box, memory card, strap and box. The camera is nice to hold. Feels like metal, looks like metal but it probably aint medal although there are some external metal components. The way the camera fires up is appealing with the lens sort of revolving out of the camera body. Flash is quite powerful for a camera of this size and it has all the functions one could want. Main gripe is the lack of ISO selection which I feel is an oversight otherwise all I need in a compact. 5 megapixels is perfectly adequate and typical of a camera of ...
