  • The Silmarillion Review

The Silmarillion is an exquisite creation myth. And Beauty is harsh in these bitter tales. The cruelty of Morgoth's will haunts all as one by one the heroes of Elves and Men fall, and hopes of survival and building lives are betrayed and destroyed, one by agonising one. The reader is bludgeoned by the malice, creating an oppressive sense of unrelenting foreboding. Of course, it is the singular moments of beauty, the doomed hope of triumph, which matters most, that blaze the imagination with endless possibilities. As a young teenager I often struggled with Tolkien’s dense prose, but I stuck with it. My dreams have never been the same since. Shine on.
