What a fantastically hysterical--yet somber--book! This alphabet book takes you quietly through the murders and untimely deaths of twenty-six tiny children in a way that's not offensive. Gorey's matter-of-fact black and white illustrations create a gray, somber world in which one actually expects unfortunate things to happen to these children. One by one, the children are assaulted by bears, thrown from a sleigh, done in by a thug, swallowing tacks, devoured by mice...it's a great coffee table book (or a great book for the creepy child in your life)! I highly recommend Edward Gorey's work. It's for anyone who has a slightly macabre sense of humor.
This little book is such a gem. The cover alone is display worthy. The pen-hatch drawings within, are just lovely and reminiscent of a much earlier time. I wanted to keep this little ditty once I read them all, but alas, I had purchased it as a gif for someone who could really enjoy it. Needless to say, it was well received. I think I will treat myself to another.

Only some of us (especially artists, I think) love Edward Gorey. I believe he created the original Addams Family. This little book is an alphabet of amusingly gruesome ways children (the "Tinies") meet their fate. Love the art! That is why I bought it, to practice drawing as he does.

This book is not for everyone. If you're a happy-go-lucky, bright N shiney, & happy endings kind of person, this book is not for you. However, if you can take violent humor and enjoy clever rhyming, then the Gashlycrumb tinies is the book for you. Edward Gorey puts together a sadly amusing collection of children who met their doom. Sometimes, their doom is sad, but most times it is funny, awkward, or relatable (Like Neville who died of ennui). If you enjoyed Tim Burton's "The Melancholy Death of Oyster Boy and Other Stories" Then I HIGHLY recommend this book.
