Bought this to watch with my daughter as she was studying Romeo and Juliet for her GCSE. I thought it might help with her revision but if anything it confused her further. I can see what they were trying to do in modernising the play but Shakespeare can be hard enough to understand without all the action that you had to try and follow too, but everyone has their own view and someone else might rave about it. Romeo and Juliet is so famous and often quoted it's hard to appreciate the thing itself, and most attempts to do so are schmalzy, sentimental; they give a kind of caricature of the second hand familiar image of the play, rather than a creative production of the play. Baz Luhrmann's film changed the way I saw the play forever, and is the best cinema adaptation of Shakespeare I've seen. The setting on an imaginary modern US town of Verona beach makes the renaissance Catholic iconographic extravagance in which Shakespeare's story is told come alive. Luhrmann uses the original verse, and works hard on the the details of the action so that the poetry works as story rather than (as often with this play) sounding like flabby rhetoric. The acting (di Caprio's debut) is superb and the costumes ...
