Reviews
The mountain-biking Ridge Riders are always looking for an adventure. Whether they're biking down a mountain trial or sliding down a slope, mystery and danger are bound to follow! This book has comic-style illustrations and a fast-paced plot to hook reluctant readers., Gr 2-6-Combining the appeal of a graphic novel and the readability of an easy reader, the Lawries have created an engaging series for struggling readers. "Slam" Duncan and his friends, downhill mountain-bike racers, star in these fast-paced stories. In Cheat Challenge, Slam accidentally stumbles on the map to a new racecourse. While he keeps the information secret from the other Ridge Riders to prevent cheating, their practice sessions on the wrong course put them in danger and Slam in a quandary. In Fear 3.1, the protagonist must conquer his fear of heights to save a friend. Similarly, he races to save the day once again in Snow Bored. Finally, in White Lightning, it's Slam's turn to be rescued by one of the Ridge Riders just in time for the big race. All four titles have full-color illustrations that are less graphic than the "graphic novel" stamp on the cover implies, but speech bubbles and sound-effect bursts help to blur the line. The action-driven narratives zip along like a downhill racecourse despite flat characterizations. Endings are vague and may leave less-experienced readers wondering if there is a page missing at the end. A glossary, a kid-safe Internet site, discussion questions, and writing prompts provide support for low-level readers but also give the books a distinct "school" feel." Despite the series limitations, kids will clamor for more., This series is geared to the young struggling or reluctant reader. Each book begins with a brief introduction to the main characters and then quickly engages the reader in a story about the Ridge Riders. The books are based on character education development and teach good lessons on honesty, fairness, overcoming fears, bullying, friendship, and taking action. The stories are upbeat with good endings. Serious issues are confronted with appropriate resolution. The colorful illustrations are well-done, the pages are not too cluttered, and the illustrations support and enhance the storyline. In all the books, the Illustrations show the children using appropriate safety gear for the sport in which they participate. This includes helmets, elbow and shin guards, and hearing and eye protections. The children are portrayed as being competent and able to fix their own bikes and equipment that makes them good role models for the young reader. Glossary. Web sites. Recommended.

Synopsis
The Ridge Riders are bored to tears. So much snow has fallen on their mountain biking practice hill that they can't practice. The only bright spot is that they don't have to go to school. Luckily, Dozy has a great idea. He turns an old skateboard and a pair of sneakers into a snowboard. Before long, everyone is snowboarding. But when Fiona's horse takes a terrible fall on the snow, Slam needs to ride through the ice to find the veterinarian. Will he make it, or is Fiona's horse doomed?, It snowed too much for the Ridge Riders to practice. Dozy turns an old skateboard and a pair of sneakers into a snowboard. Before long, everyone is snowboarding.

- v***v (2054)- Feedback left by buyer.Past monthVerified purchaseAlthough this book was not as described, with no picture of it in the listing, the seller communicated well and quickly gave me a full refund while letting me keep it. The minimal packaging left the book a bit vulnerable (typical for ThriftBooks), but it did arrive safely and timely. As usual, it’s hit or miss with this seller, but often times you can get great values, and their customer service is always very good. Many other sellers with millions of transactions don’t even communicate.
