Reviews
Tocci grabs students' attention by opening this book with the dramatic stories of the first recipients of the wonder drug, then moves on to the story of the man who discovered it. Discussion of Fleming's childhood, medical school career, early research with microbes, and his military medical career studying infections are provided as background. His discovery of penicillin and the effects it had on his life and on the world are discussed in detail. Large type and lots of white space make this title accessible, and the black-and-white photographs enhance the well-written text. Activities for students reinforce the principles that are presented. A sound choice for science and biography collections., School Library Journal September 2002

Synopsis
Before the discovery of penicillin, someone could die from the smallest scratch if it were to become infected. Today, penicillin routinely cures people of infections that were once fatal. The discoverer of this miracle drug was Alexander Fleming. This discovery was accidental, but still required Fleming's keen eye for observation. In addition to this discovery, Fleming also was a major contributor to the study of antiseptics, wound infection, and natural tissue defenses against infection, particularly with his work on lysosomes. For his dedication to research and his contributions to medicine, Alexander Fleming is considered one of the great minds of science.
