About this product

Product Information

Taking place four years after the events chronicled in 1998's hit arcade game and subsequent Dreamcast port, Namco's Soul Calibur II continues the weapons-based combat found in its predecessor but from within larger, more interactive 3D environments complete with walls and breakable objects. Among the returning characters from the series, which originated in 1995 as Soul Edge, are Astaroth, Siegfried, Ivy, Hwang, Kilik, Xianghua, Taki, Heishiro, and Nightmare. In addition to a retooled 3D engine featuring eight-way directional movement, a lineup of new characters has entered the fray, including Sophitia's younger sister Cassandra and two characters designed by comic book artist Todd McFarlane: Necrid and Spawn. The latter is promoted as an Xbox exclusive.

The story begins as the mysterious and powerful Soul Edge makes its presence known to the world. Infecting anyone who wields it with a lust for power and domination, the sword had most recently found its way into young Siegfried's inexperienced grip. Transformed into an entity called Nightmare, the once noble knight is rumored to have caused widespread death and destruction throughout the latter half of the 16th century. Worse yet, illness and strange happenings have befallen those who once fought for control of the evil blade. The few who survived plan on battling for the enchanted weapon once more, some to destroy it, some to harness its power for their own gain.

Seven modes include Arcade, Versus, Survival, Team Battle, Time Attack, Practice, and Weapon Master. The latter offers players a chance to collect over 200 weapons while fulfilling a character's distinct storyline. Players engage rival fighters while advancing across a world map and must satisfy specific conditions to win, such as performing a combo attack, defensive move, or throwing an enemy off a platform. Once new weapons are acquired, ranging from battle-axes and swords to staves and spears, they can be used in other modes of play. Arcade is based on the 2002 coin-op game, Versus has players battling a friend, Survival is a test of endurance against an ongoing flow of enemies, and Team Battle involves pitting two groups of characters against one another. Time Attack challenges players to defeat opponents in record time, while Practice helps players familiarize themselves with the various moves characters can perform.

  • Return to the stage of history Soul Blade fans (literrally).

“Welcome back to stage of history”. What better line for a review of this game series, let alone the series’ third iteration (if you count Soul Blade/Edge). I literally went to 2003 when this was first released here and like back in the day it is a slice of heaven (pardon the pun). Soul calibur 2 is considered by many to be the best of the Soul blade series. Apart from returning favorites like Mitsurugi; Taki; and Sophitia; we have newcomers like French rapier wielding Raphael; Wind priestess tonfa user Talim, and Sophitia’s sister Cassandra who plays like her older sister along with moves of the own. The game has many modes to keep you entertained like it’s brawling brother “Tekken” and a sweet mode called Edge Master Mode where you will travel across the land and obtain new variations of your weapons that can used in other modes. The icing on the cake is that you can play with Todd Mcfarlene’s Spawn (guest character) who blends in well the others. This is a great game to have in Xbox (OG) that sadly lack good fighters and it will not disappoint.

  • Soul Calibur II for OG XBOX

One of the best fighting games ever imo. Game play is smooth and a good pace. You could be strategic or just button mash. The game is well balanced with a wide variety of characters and weapons. The stages have a nice addition of being able to now use the walls in combat. And they have a good variety of them also. The graphics are beautiful for the time it came out especially on a HDTV in 720p. Characters and stages look very nice and blend together well. If you liked the first Soul Calibur like i did on the Sega Dreamcast, then you will love part 2 as well. It is more of the same with added moves, slightly better graphics and more game modes and characters. I am just a little mad that my seller (canvew) did not state that the game case had a water mark on the label. O well. The disc was in great shape and plays well. Pick this one up! Two thumbs way up!

  • Spawn in a fighting game

This quality fighting game is even better with Spawn in it. The graphics seem to resemble the Dreamcast era because the game was originally produced for the Sega NAOMI arcade board. In fact, some Xbox games resemble Dreamcast games as well. It also plays solid no matter what platform you use. Get the Xbox version if you want to try playing as Spawn like I did. Major selling point!

  • All-time classic

I remember waiting for the midnight release for the Gamecube version of Soul Calibur II (with Link as a guest character). When I sold that console, the game sadly went with it. The graphics still hold up!. On my 1080p television, the XBox360 displays a 4:3 ratio, but it's crazy nostalgic to play, and the mechanics are as smooth as ever. Music is phenomenal as well.

  • Best fighter on vanilla Xbox

Spectacular graphics and hit detection, interesting characters and a spectacular single player "story" mode. Original fighting engine and a ton of moves and combos for each character. Better than mortal kombat, street fighter, DoA and every other fighter I can name
