Synopsis
Since the Ukrainian crisis in 2014, Russia's support to the European far right--and to a variety of populist leaders more globally--has become a cornerstone of the West's perception of Moscow as a "spoiler" on the international scene. The fact that Russia's most fervent supporters are now to be found on the right of the ideological spectrum should not be a surprise. The European far right has always had Russophile tendencies, but these were obscured during the Cold War, when rightist politics were most of all anti-Communist. Entangled Far Rights traces the "intellectual romance" that existed between European far right groups and their Russian-Soviet counterparts during the twentieth century and accounts for their recent re-emergence., Since the rise of Putin, many have puzzled by the strange affinity of the far right in the West for today's authoritarian Russia. Entangled Far Rights explores the deep roots of this phenomena and reveals it to be a running thread through the entire history of the long 20th century and present regardless of the changing political character of Russia's regimes., Russia's political and financial support for Europe's emergent rightwing nationalism has become a cornerstone of Putin's foreign policy. Beginning with the Ukrainian crisis in 2014 and culminating with Russia's recent interference in several Western elections, including the American presidential contest, the West's perception of Moscow as a spoiler on the international scene became well established. But the fact that Russia's most fervent supporters in the West are now to be found on the right of the ideological spectrum still puzzles many people. In fact, this should not come as a surprise; the European far right has always had remarkably strong Russophilic tendencies, but these were obscured during the Cold War, when anti-communism reigned as the dominant ideological stance on the right. Entangled Far Rights traces the "intellectual romance" with Russia that had long existed among European far right groups, from fascists to populists, throughout the twentieth century and explains their reemergence in post-Cold War conditions.
