Synopsis
Women on Ice is the first book to focus upon the vibrant world of women's ice hockey in western Canada during the First World War and through the 1920s. The Vancouver Amazons were one of the most important teams during this perod. Their championship laurels and their association with hockey's famous Patrick brothers distinguish the Amazons from other women's hockey teams of the era. They were one of several teams that met during the annual Banff winter carnivals to compete for what was sometimes officially (and sometimes unofficially) regarded as the women's ice hockey championship of western Canada. With the support of more than three dozen photographs, many of which are published here for the first time, Women on Ice follows the fortunes of the Vancouver women as they encountered teams that deserve to be legendary, but are now largely forgotten. Also profiled are teams from what was the geographic heart of women's hockey in British Columbia until the First World War - the Kootenays - as well as some of the dominant teams of the post-war years from Alberta. As is the case with so much in Canadian history, the western hockey story differs radically from the experience of Ontario, Quebec and Atlantic Canada. The curious decline of women's hockey in the 1930s consigned to obscurity the history of these and of all women's teams in western Canada. Women on Ice attempts to rescue some of that fascinating history and will appeal to anyone interested in the past, present or future of women's ice hockey., Women on Ice opens up the almost unknown story of women's ice hockey in western Canada during the First World War and the 1920s. The Vancouver Amazons, with their championship laurels and a close association with hockey's famous Patrick brothers, were perhaps the most famous, but they were only one of a number of hockey teams that met during the annual Banff winter carnivals to compete for the women's ice hockey championship of western Canada.Meticulously researched and studded with captivating photos, the book introduces us to a whole host of teams from British Columbia and Alberta - the Regents, the Hollies, the Rustlers, the Amazons, the curiously named Swastikas, and many more - teams that deserve to be legendary, but are now largely forgotten.Although the crowds at women's games were sometimes bigger tan the men's, the popularity of women's hockey declined in the 1930s. Subsequently, the history of all women's teams in western Canada was consigned to obscurity. In Women on Ice, Wayne Norton rescues much of the detail and drama of hockey's fascinating history., Literary Nonfiction. Women's Studies. Canadian History. WOMEN ON ICE is the first book to focus upon the vibrant world of women's ice hockey in western Canada during the First World War and the 1920s. With the support of more than three dozen photographs, many of which are published here for the first time, WOMEN ON ICE follows the fortunes of the Vancouver Amazons as they encountered teams from Victoria and New Westminster and the powerful squads from Calgary and Edmonton--teams that deserve to be legendary, but are now largely forgotten. Also profiled are teams from the Kootenays and Alberta. The curious decline of women's hockey in the 1930s consigned to obscurity the history of these and of all women's teams in western Canada. - v***v (2054)- Feedback left by buyer.Past monthVerified purchaseAlthough this book was not as described, with no picture of it in the listing, the seller communicated well and quickly gave me a full refund while letting me keep it. The minimal packaging left the book a bit vulnerable (typical for ThriftBooks), but it did arrive safely and timely. As usual, it’s hit or miss with this seller, but often times you can get great values, and their customer service is always very good. Many other sellers with millions of transactions don’t even communicate.
