The Kirbiest of Kirby games
The title says it all. A "2D" side scroller, this is a standard Kirby game with a lot of great power-ups and interesting/fun uses of the 3D effect, such as hoping back and forth between the front and the back of the screen and bosses that travel between the planes. The overall goal is to save King Dedede who has been stolen by a six armed minion of Queen Sectonia, a baddie wants to reck havoc on Dreamland. In order to advance to the top of the "Dream-stalk" on which Sectonia lives, the player must collect enough 'sun-stones', which are placed throughout the levels, in order to advance to the boss stages. A straightforward and simple plot that Kirby has always used and perfected. The gameplay is standard Kirby and there isn't much to say that anyone familiar with Kirby doesn't already ... The title says it all. "A" to jump, "B" to suck, Down to swallow. Repeat. A lot. There are a lot of fun abilities, approximately 20 by my count. Each comes with a variety of moves, depending on if you're next to an enemy or how you are pressing the directional buttons/joystick. The level designs are nothing spectacular, but the difficulty of bosses as well as finding the locations of the sun-stones does increase, which I found very nice. I completed the game with just over 60 of the 100 sun-stones and want to return to the levels to collect them all. A new feature to this game is the 'supernova' ability that kirby receives from trees toward the end of the stages. This ability gives Kirby the ability to suck even harder than before (and you thought it wasn't possible), swallowing massive objects/baddies that block his path and allowing him to perform some otherwise un-weilding platforming. Though it's presence in the game isn't that large, it is fun to watch even bosses become a piece of cake by simply pressing "B" and swallowing them whole in a matter of seconds. I found the platforming and puzzle solving with this ability to actually be pretty interesting, albeit somewhat simple and straightforward. There are two games in addition to the main story mode: 1) Kirby Fighters and 2) Dedede's Drum Rush. Kirby fighters is essentially a straight up rehash of Super Smash Bros., but with only kirby as a playable character. Quite frankly, I found this mode to be doing Smash better than the latest iterations of Smash. You have to go through various rounds of enemy kirby's (on levels of easy, hard, and difficult) in order to win the medal and complete the rounds. It's reminiscent of the various battles in adventure mode from Melee (which is my favorites Smash and perhaps why I like it so much). The challenge this mode presents is that you must select a certain ability at the beginning that will stick with you through all the rounds. Being better at some abilities than others, I found myself challenged by trying new abilities I wouldn't otherwise use in the story mode. A lot of fun. All in all, this feature is a fun full out brawl of adorable little Kirbys - what more do you need? This is a great feature that I will revisit for a while, even after I 100% this game. Dedede's Drum Rush on the other hand... well let me just say, I have only played this three times and have no desire to touch it again. Dedede bounces on drums, which project you to different heights if you click "A" at the appropriate time, as you slowly scroll to the right. It's slow paced, annoying if you don't click the button at what the game deems the exact right moment, and downright dull. It's difficult to do well and doesn't give you much of a chance to enjoy the reward at the end, because by that point you are more relieved that it's over than anything else. Interestingly and annoyingly, you have to play these mini-games in order to 100% your file in the game. I wish these were treated as additional mini-games instead of mandatory features required to "complete" the game. After completing the story mode, the player unlocks to new features: 1) Arena, where you battle bosses, and 2) the ability to play through the game as Dedede. I have yet to try the arena feature, but I immediately turned on the Dedede run and fell in love with it instantly. He wrecks all kinds of havoc spinning his massive mallet around and it's just a joy to play with. The goal of his run-throughs is to complete the levels as quickly as possible, but you need not do that to enjoy the experience and I found myself taking my time to collect and destroy as much as I could. All in all, good Job Hal Laboratory. Another solid game.

This game is a Kirby game. It's got normal Kirby gameplay, cool powers with a very nice variety of movesets, so that's the good stuff. The game has no soul. I think the creators knew it has no soul, because the amount of sparkles and glitter they dumped all over the graphics is nearly unprecedented. If you love glittery graphics and nothing else, buy this game. But, the story line is almost non-existent, it feels like what it is; an excuse to make a new Kirby game. There's no inspiration behind it, it feels like the developers used a cold formula to build it. Kirby+sucking things up+fun powers+cute+glitter = Just Another Kirby Game. A solid revamping of a classic series!
