  • The Man I Married (DVD, 2012)

    THE MAN I MARRIED was way ahead of its time. It accurately portrayed, albeit with some Hollywood Nazi stereotyping, the situation in Germany prior to the outbreak of World War Two. The movie essentially nailed many of the lesser known facts about life in Nazi Germany that are common historic knowledge now, but would have been obscure to a non-German outsider at the time. For example, during one scene there is dialogue about the German Volkswagen and the savings program designed to enable Germans to buy one. The movie takes place largely in 1938 Berlin. Joan Bennett portrays Carol Hoffman, a successful publication executive who accompanies her German husband on -- what is supposed to be -- a vacation trip to Germany. Unfortunately for Hoffman her husband, who was originally returning ...
